How was Cal Club? what was your experience like?
I know you are asking the OP, but I'll chime in.

I've had the opportunity to play a few times thanks to friends being members. Course is awesome. There are no yardage markers, so you have to have a range finder or GPS. There aren't cart paths either. It's also a men's club, which is interesting. The club house is awesome for post round drinks, etc. TV's, newspaper clippings framed about Ben Hogan and others playing there way back when. Practice facilities are great, and obviously there are never a ton of people there, so it's a great environment to improve and better your game. When the wind blows in the afternoon, which it does, it gets very, very difficult. It's a golfer's club rather than a country club. If I could join one club on the peninsula, it'd be Cal Club.

For me if you are ever in the south bay, I recommend driving down 30 minutes to San Juan Oaks. It is a Fred Couples course that a while back hosted a shootout. Nice layout in the rolling hills with just enough challenge. Beautiful greens and course is well maintained. The pro shop is always well stocked and offer some great prices on many things. The club house has great food at a reasonable price and lots of beer on tap. Always a plus.

The two pubic (muni) courses in Fairfield, Rancho Solano and Paradise Valley are not bad at all. Prices are decent, holes have a variety, and the black tees can make a 300 yd. WRXer driver whimper.

Yocha DeHe in Brooks is spectacular, but a bit too expensive for us normal folks to play more than a couple of times a year. It is quite a drive because of the remoteness.

Ive play Greenhorn couple times is nice. Had a little issue with a homeowner up there. My son was about 11 or 12 and hit his ball on someones property apparently, not on there lawn or nothing like that.
So he went to pick up his ball and some ole coot screamed at him and told him to get off his property. Put a bad taste in my mouth.
No way. He probably was eyeing your sons golf ball for his shag bag. I am pretty sure it comes with the territory living on a golf course especially since most off the houses do not have any fencing as to show off their back yards.

I'll throw in a sleeper course that many may or may not like: Mare Island. Granted, I only got to play it once but the front side is a serious classic... I believe it was actually originally designed in the late 1800's or early 1900's if memory serves me. The back nine is a new addition and was pretty frustrating. I would play it again just for the old school front 9 ... and to play the back 9 better now that I have seen it once.

For the price, I will pick Whitney Oaks in Rocklin and Darkhorse in Auburn. Affordable, very nice and Whitney Oaks will eat your lunch.
I live out that way and we avoid Whitney Oaks, it's miserable! Darkhorse is one of my favorites though, spectacular, tough AND fair.

Whitney Oaks is just brutal. I'll throw Turkey Creek in Lincoln, CA into the mix as well (outside Sac)

Sevillano is nowed called "The Links At Rolling Hills". I play that course for $35 with a cart because I live in Butte County. On Tuesday and Thursday it's 1/2 off the price of the buffet, $6.00!

Good call! My dad lives in Corning. I Try to play there when I visit. Always in great shape.
