Golf in and around Highlands, NC

Any good public courses?

I know there are some elaborate golf courses in and around Highlands, NC, but was wondering are there any good public courses that a vacationer could play in the spring? TIA.

I am from near Boone and there are not many public courses around but one of the best is Jefferson Landing which is semi private and usually available if you call ahead. It is a bit pricey though.. Boone country club is a favorite of the locals up here because it is well maintained and a pretty good value, however it gets crowded. The course my friends and I go to is actually in TN. It's Red Tail Mountain, it is a beautiful layout and very well maintained. If you are up in the northern part of the mountains I would check those out.

You have to stay at the hotel, but Old Edwards is nice.

check out sky valley...it's awesome and just down the mtn to the georgia side.very close actually.

ditto on sky valley, very nice, fun course. also look up sequoyah national, its about 45 min away but definitely interesting.

I've heard Sequoyah National is nice. I'll have to check it and Sky Valley out this spring.

Sequoyah has some very rugged terrain. It's very pretty but it has some severe elevation changes. Some people like that type of golf, some don't.

Depending on your handicap, Sequoyah might be too severe. Sky Valley is very nice after the redo, but depending on how early in the spring you are there, it might be in great shape or a little rugged. Unfortunately, it might not even be open.

As someone said, Old Edwards is nice, but can be pricey.

Maybe you can find a member and get on one of the private clubs! :good:

Lots of GREAT golf in Highlands/Cashiers area. I worked at a club up there for 5 years. Here are the private clubs that are up there. If you belong to a private club now your pro may be able to call and get you on one or more of them.

Highlands Country Club
Cullasaja Club
Wildcat Cliffs
Old Edwards Club (as said you can stay at the Inn and play there)
Trillium Golf Links
Mountaintop
Wade Hampton
Country Club of Sapphire Valley

As far as public golf not much to choose from in close proximity. Driving to Cherokee to play Sequoyah is an option. Maggie Valley golf club in Maggie Valley is also that direction. Broadmoor golf links in Asheville by the airport is nice. I would also recommend The Walker Course at Clemson University. Very nice track. If you want something close by you can play High Hampton golf club. It's an old George Cobb design that is very short. It's not hard but is fun to play.

I have a real good friend that is the head superintendent at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tn. I'll try to see if he has any connections to those courses. Thanks to all for the info.

My inlaws live in Lake Toxaway and ive played a couple times at Sapphire National. If I remember right, that is relatively close to Highlands. I also got a chance once to play Lake Toxaway CC. That was a pretty nice course.

That would probably work. The Honors and HCC have a few members in common, so you might have a chance that way. I might could do something for you as well if you need it. Wade and Mountain Top are highly rated and great courses, but trust me, HCC is the best.

As I said, I can steer you to some good public courses as well. No need to drive to Asheville or Cherokee.

Hey needmorepars, if you need a 4th at The Honors, I'm your man! :wave:

I get to play The Honors 4 or 5 times a year. They shut down on Mondays for the caddies and maintenance crew to play, and David or Chris always invite me over to get a round in. It's more player friendly now then in years past. Still an awesome course though. When we need a 4th I'll give you a shout.
