I'm sure they have a weight tolerance and that's the reason. Probably most any putter can be revived if you remove enough material but how will the balance and feel end up? Not saying yours are a problem just asking a question.

The engravings on the Newport look pretty shallow before the resto, can't see the after pics. He did a nice job if you wanted aftermarket work and to make the putter usable. You lost all the original milling on the face, neck, bumpers, shoulders, etc. As far as the TeI3...now the insert is very close to the topline, probably why the CS turned it down.

They do look great now though as usable putters.

You are correct on a couple of counts.

The custom shop wouldn't do the newport because face milling would remove the face stamping, and wouldn't do the TEI3 because of the top line to close to the insert.

Now that being said do any of you really think it would have been better to toss these out?
I think many players like a lite putter or a little lead tape does wonders. When they get here I'll weight them and report back.

Absolutely not. But I was just giving my opinion as to why the Custom Shop wouldn't do the work. They won't send putters back where they lose engravings of they'll look too shallow. Personally I prefer work to be original to the putter, with any manufacturer so I don't particularly like the deep milling. However they do look great and will work just fine. IMO the coolest part about the older Cameron putters was the visible pronounced milling in the bumpers, shoulders, neck, etc. I would still rather have either of those putters now than before you sent them in..

it's possible to weld in some of hte dents to keep the weight up, so they dont have to lose as much material. the remill will take off anywhere from 4-10 grams, which these old putters can't really afford to lose (some were under 330). However, if you really want it to play up to weight, get tom to throw in some tungsten weights. he's one ofthe best in the business for that.

Why are so many old TeI3's like that - where the insert is nearly flush with the top line? Does that much material get lost over time, or were all the inserts installed too high?

I think in most cases someone has tried to rehab themselves and has gone to deep. But if people used head covers on these it wouldn't be a problem. just me and my head cover sickness:)

You are right on all accounts,

I however will probably never take one of these to the course so the added expense is not worth it to me. I've got 120 putters and bringing them back to life is fun for me whether I do it myself or get someone with more tools and skills to do it for me.

Resto....times 2....equals somewhere in the ball park north of $300~!!!!

Personally I would have junked these two and bought a new SC. Granted, you went with Slighter and probably saved $ vs the CS, but still....I just don't understand why people in this world hold on to junk, especially golf clubs.....regardless of whose name is on it. There comes a point when golf equipment has served its purpose, and should be moved. Unless you're a collector, or hoarder it's pointless to hold on to old crap, that someone else could benefit from. Sorry if I offend anyone, but these putters have were refused for a reason....and all those reasons have already been brought to light.

On the flip side...you now have some beautiful paper weights....or top of the line putters for your kids or wife, who would never know the difference to begin with. drinks.gif

There are several reasons that it happens. With the first generation ones, where there's no elastomer track surrounding the insert, there was already very little material between the topline and the insert. Couple that with people not using headcovers, etc, and the fact that it's thin and the topline gets marred up and rolls easily. A prior restoration by Titleist would also be a reason, as Titleist usually takes a bunch more material off instead of straightening the metal and fixing imperfections prior to sanding it back smooth. They'd instead prefer to just sand it until it's smooth instead of rework the metal because it takes far less time. The custom shop does much of the same, rework the topline with sanding instead of straightening it in a time consuming process then sanding it back smooth. There are several factors that go into it, but the predominant one is lack of headcover usage.

There is a point, "who would never know the difference to begin with". Just because Scotty says a 34" putter needs to be 340 grams doesn't make it gospel.

Some people may like a liter or heavier putter. Even Tiger puts lead tape on his putter some times

Next time you are going to junk your beat up Camerons I'd be happy to pay the shipping
