Pretty solid. I did a tier 2 sampler with Rez, Big Doedish, New beginnings, Figgie Smalls, and Stosh. New beginnings and Figgie smalls were new and interesting.

What did you think the second time around? I just had Hopslam for the first time and loved it. I had never heard of it before but also love Two Hearted.

Still thought it was way over rated. I can think of 5-10 year round IPAs that I'd rather drink. It's decent i rated it 4.04 on beer advocate, but it's not upper tier.

What are your go-to's. For me, Sculpin & Two Hearted. I travel to ABQ quite often so I get to enjoy Elevated and Project Dank from La Cumbre on a regular basis too. I think all are on the Beer Advocate Top 50 or so.

I like hopslam but my favorite local DIPA is double crooked tree and it's not even close.

Two hearted is def my go to IPA. I love left hand nitro beers, or really any beer on nitro for easy drinking goodness. Wake up dead nitro is dangerously drinkable and delicious

Two heavyweights at Slaters 50/50 burger joint. Avery Beast and Deschutes Abyss.... Tried wife's Hopslam, wasn't all that and didn't live up to hype..

Had the 2014 on draft a few months back at hopcat downtown and wow! A great stout for sure.

04/01- Friday OC Area Visit Bruery in the evening

04/02 Saturday Early Lunch at Firestone Walker Barrel Works in Buellton then drive up to Paso Robles check in to hotel and Dinner at the main Firestone.

Goal is to come home with a whole bunch of Sucaba and Parabola, maybe some barrel works sours for the fiance.

 

I wasnt planning on making it all the way up to Paso but looking at the maps being able to cut directly over to I-5 from Paso cuts the drive time home to the same as it would be coming back from Buellton, and I dont have to drive through the heart of LA on the way back.

 

Any socal guys want to meet up at the Bruery Friday just let me know.

As much as I hate to even say things like this I will...

Hopslam is a shell of what it used to be. The 14-15-16 batches have all been noticeably and progressively worse.

Perhaps my palette has changed and I have access to options that were not formerly available but sadly I'd never hunt for it like I used to.

Your options are pretty limitless. Michigan is an awesome beer state. You might want to go to a local store and use the create your own six pack option to try a bunch of different beers quickly. Or maybe a mix pack from one of the top breweries, like Founders, Bell's, Shorts, etc.

Your options are pretty limitless. Michigan is an awesome beer state. You might want to go to a local store and use the create your own six pack option to try a bunch of different beers quickly. Or maybe a mix pack from one of the top breweries, like Founders, Bell's, Shorts, etc.

 

Or even visit a brewery and try a fight of beers so you can sample a few side by side and see what jumps out at you, then sample beers of that similar style.

 

I'm sure most of the guys in here will agree that tastes evolve over time, and beers that you initially might not be a fan of might become favorites over time, so keep an open mind and try lots of stuff!

When I really dove into craft beer I would just go up and down the isles of Total Wine and throw stuff into the cart to discover what i liked/didnt like. I would grab inexpensive highly rated stuff they had out. That and a lot of texts with ForeLife. Stuff like ABT 12 i never would have tried and find out i love if it wasn't for this. Over the years my palette has expanded from IPA to darker/stronger stuff and now I'm starting to drift back towards IPA. Drinking high abv stouts and barleywines all the time gets expensive and also makes me very jaded on the quality of beers hahaha.

So many others that I wish AZ had half the quality of.

Scored a couple 4pks of this gem last week and cracked the first. Absolutely nothing played out with this type of brew. The most balanced juicy IPA I've had this year. Best in the world...eh who am I to judge.

Cracked open one of my 2016 sucabas, such a good beer, probably my fave ba barley wine, can't think of anything I like better or anything I'd change. Maybe a little more heat would be nice to make it a sipper, it's so smooth that I have a hard time resisting the urge to empty my glass lol
