Had the Stone Enjoy by 2/14 Black IPA and was underwhelmed. Seemed to lack body and the roasted malt flavor. Wasn't hoppy enough either. For a black IPA, Wookey Jack and Dark Penance are so much better. Cracking into the Unfiltered IPA tonight, hope that's better.

 

Unfiltered was the better of the two but I found it a tad boozy. For what it is, andnwith nationwide distro, it is my favorite of the EnjoyBy line. Maybe I've just been drinking too many APAs and IPAs in the 7% range. Sure you'll dig it and wished you'd have passed on the Black IPA.

That was half of their cooler... They have a machine that fills 32oz cans, no need to take a growler to the course...

Picked up a growler of Madtree's Motueka High. For me, much smoother than their Galaxy and Citra high.

Patiently waiting for pineapple sculpin and watermelon dorado to make it to Michigan. Big fan of odd side pineapple Ipa and can't wait to compare.

I'll post final thoughts later but enjoying KBS with a little age on it to smooth out the coffee

I absolutely loved the KBS. Haven't gotten to try the Parabola, but the Founders is tough to beat.

I think KBS is best within the first 6 months. Bourbon County does well with age. I've not had Parabola yet but I do have a bottle I need to open soon.

I'm not an in your face coffee guy I've had KBS super fresh and it was a bit over the top coffee vs say bcbcs. I love the subtlety of coffee in prairie bomb.

 

And yes bcbs ages very well. All these bottles are just over or just under a year old which makes it a solid comparison.

So it's super close but goes Parabola BCBS & KBS

 

Parabola super smooth and a bit more barrel character/vanilla in it which I love

 

BCBS very smooth a little heat still left in it and a very close 2nd place

 

KBS still a bit harsher than the other two. Good beer but even comparing it to aged BCBCS it's just a step below the others IMO.

I honestly didn't like/appreciate IPAs until I started spending more time in this thread. Now the taste has been acquired and I'm a convert. Still love me some stouts and brown ales though.

 

That being said, had some of my Nugget Nectar (from the growler) yesterday and was very impressed with it. Will try a bottled one today to see if I can tell the difference.

In other news, the NxS is still a fantastic beer, wondering if I should grab a few more while they are still around.

Never had a black IPA that I thought was "up there." Just either too much going on with the malt and hops fighting or thin and just there. Haven't tried the Wookey Jack because of this. And not a fan of Rye's either. Something I have to live with.

 

Now, the Nugget Nectar! That's solid right there. Was up in Lancaster/Hershey in November and picked up some Nugget Nectar, Mad Elf, and Troegenator straight from the source. Delicious as always. If you like that, try Unearthy from Southern Tier. That's what a super-hopped IPA can be; balanced and smooth while bringing the hops.
