That's a complete generalization based on the MPF "scoring system". We can't get the most out of the MPF, if we put too much weight on the final score. We have to look at each individual measurement and how it relates to our impact and ball flight tendencies.

Absolutely, but it is as simple as it can be described for someone who isn't going to take the time / or simply doesn't want to take the time to learn what all the data is that makes a final MPF score.

I just made the change from Mizuno MP-63s to Titleist 712 AP2s (my handicap has been between .4 and 6 in the last 10 yrs).

The MP-63s have a MPF of ~400 and the AP2s ~500. I notice a huge improvement in the quality of my misses. Which individual measurement from the MPF system am I "liking"? My normal miss (toe) shots are vastly improved. I like the Maltby system, but don't understand it very well at this point.

You'll want to look at C-Dimension, which is the horizontal location of the COG(sweetspot). Then look at the MOI.

The MP-63 has a C-D at 1.166". It's MOI is 11.87

The AP2 has a C-D at 1.265". The MOI is 12.15

The AP2 is indeed more forgiving further out on the face or further from the hosel, because it's horizonatal COG(sweetspot) location is further out

It's interesting to look at the MPF ratings and remembering what I've hit over the years. I was thinking about replacing my MP-57s with MP-H5s but after a couple of range sessions and hitting real balls on the course, I didn't find the demo 6 iron any better. Looking at the Maltby ratings now, I understand why.

Basic VCOG
H5: .845
57: .823

RCOG:

H5: .490
57: .583

Actual VCOG
H5: .844
57: .770

With no big difference in C Dim and MOI, there simply isn't a reason for switch at least in the mid and short irons.

The interesting thing is that the other irons that have drawn my attention is the W/S FG Tour 100s with DG Pro shafts. The actual VCOG is close to the H5 but considering I'm a digger, I'd like to hit my short irons lower and the DG Pro shafts are supposed to help with launching the long irons, I think I need to give these clubs a proper chance. Not to mention my miss is towards the toe and the C Dim is bigger in the FGs than in the 57s (1.205 vs 1.126). Maybe that plays a big role in why they felt so good. I was killing them indoors earlier in the spring, maybe the turf interaction won't be too bad.

Or maybe I should just try the used set of Titleist 695 MBs the pro shop has.
