So I Want To Get A Combo Set of Irons

Another GREAT option would be the Taylor Made TPs, you could do a TB CB in the 3 and 4 iron, TP MC in the 5-6 or 7 and TP MB in the 7 or 8-PW along with the shaft of your choosing.

This is looking like a good option. Can anyone who is playing this combo comment? I am going to be testing all the options today, got the day off and the wife is working partytime2.gif

Have fun at PI. Tell Chris hello. Make sure to give us a report back.

Hit a bunch today and liked a lot f the offerings. I hit the Nike VRII Pro combo, Tmag mc/mb, Adams A12 pro/mb2, Mizuno mp69/ 59 &63, Cobra S3 pro and the Epon af-302/ tour. The only irons that are completly ruled out are the Adams. They looked pretty good and all but I didn't really care for the feel of these irons. I know they have a big following but were just not for me.

The Epons are pretty amazing. The feel is so very soft and they were pretty long. If price was no consideration i would just stick these in the bag, but sadly it is not. I also really liked the Mizzy 69/63 combo route. I have always liked Mizuno forgings and they did not dissapoint. The VR's and mc/mb's were prety much neck and neck and were both pretty nice. The S3's were also a pleasent suprise.

I am going to continue to test them out as I am not in a big rush for once in my life. There is still lots of cold weather in front of me but I would like to get whatever I choose in the bag within 45 days to be ready to go this season.

I played this past season with a set of Anser irons after a break from golf and I think they may have served there purpose and it is time to move on. I finished the season at a 4.9 index (thanks to some good chipping) and I feel that my iron play was the weak point in my game. My GIR was not the best and my goal is to improve upon that this season.
I am looking for a combo set that are not super tiny heads and have a small amount of progressive offset. I will be getting 4-pw and I am considering the 8-pw to be mb. My main objectives going this route is to have better control of trajectory (high ball hitter) and better distance control. I welcome some constructive suggestions.
I went to the range with a buddy today so he could try out his new clubs. DISCLAIMER...I live in the Buffalo, NY area, so it was an indoor range with mats.
Dave's clubs are Cleveland CG16= 5-6-7, and CG16 Tour= 8-9-pw. ALL shafted with DG SL's. The 5-6-7 are strong lofted, the 8-9-pw are more traditionaly lofted. So Dave had the 7 & 8 made at the same length. (Thought process was to cut down on a potential distance gap)

Let me tell you...I think he is onto something. This is a great combo set, and the accuracy (in the dome) was great! I hit every iron, and with each one, I could pick out a panel anywhere on the back of the dome and hit it. Ball flights seemed to be consistant. Feel was good. (Not as good as my Mizzy's), but good! And the ball seemed to explode off the face. I can't wait to hit the outside this summer. Who know's, I may have a set of Mizzy's for sale if these Clevelands play as weel as they seem too. Plus...All 6 irons...with custom shafts and length/lie...$525 !!

Might be worth looking into for ya!!

LOL, here we go from most to least:

Epon af 302/ Tour - What can I say, butter soft forging. I would consider just playing the 302's. They are very long and a s Chris says. "they just compress the ball in a different way". I will be hitting these again and hope I don't like them as much as I did today

Mizuno mp69/63 - Again great soft feel. There is just something about the Mizuno's that appeal to me. I really like the head design and they instill confidence for me when at address. Very solid and soft is the best way to describe them fo me.

Nike VR Pro Combos - Solid and aagin I like the head shape. Grooves on the face are kind of "busy" but I can look past that.

Cobra S3 Pro - Very solid and a pretty good feel. Decent on my eyes but not my favorite.

Tmag mc/mb - I really wanted to like these more than I did. I liked the MC more than the MB's. Pretty good feel with the mc's, but the mb's just did nothing for me.

Adams A12 Pro/ MB2 - They look better than they performed for me. I did not like they way the felt when struck and I discounted them fairly quickly.

So there is my breif order of merit!

Funny, you are the 3rd person to tell me that... Uh oh shok.gif

I was too burned out to swing the Razr fit and I already was doing $$ calculations in my mind so I decided on another day. My inner ho is going to put me in the poor house if I don't use a little restraint

Why not just add on some S56's in the low irons to the Anser set? I think you would be surprised how good they feel. Also the I20 or I20/S56 combo may be just what you are looking for.

I considered going this route but the transition from S56 to Anser head size and offset is quite different. That coupled with the cast to forged also turned me off.

1ton im really really starting to like my pro combos - alot.

Enough to possibly shelve a custom set of Ap2s.

Try them again and give them a fair shot.
I would stick with your AP2s KG! They are much more forgiving on those less than stellar lies (versus mats and sims which is a huge difference IMO) and the custom shafts on trackman seemed to give you great numbers. I've seen how far you hit them on the course, I think you keep them and continue to work on your swing. Sorry to threadjack 1tondriver.

Yea, I am going to run through my options again K. I get all giddy when selecting new clubs and have suffered from buyers remorse more than a few times so I am trying something different like not rushing into things busted2.gif

No worries ODS

Working on it - 3 lessons in. Topping everything and losing distance but I think it's all going to be worth it in the end.

You have two options you can buy a per made OEM combo set or you can make your own combo set by combining the best of a couple types of clubs from one brand. Only thing with that is you must choose what lofts you want for the complete set!

I cut out of work early today and had another go at it. I am really liking the mp 69 scoring clubs. They feel fantastic and flight the ball real well for me. I am however unsure what to pair them up with. The 63's have a thicker topline and I am not sure I want to go that route. I have yet to hit the 59's and was wondering if they have a similar topline to the 69's? If I mix the mizzy models their lofts are the same across the mp line which is good. I am also thinking about going back to steel shafts as my elbow pain seems to be the same with the steelfiber's.

Is anyone playing a 59/69 combo set and if so what is your take?

Now a friend of mine has what he calls his 'rainbow' set. Got them new, all at once, from Ping. G15 3,4,5. I15 6,7,8 and Anser 9 and PW. Anser SW and Eye2 XG LW.. Says it works for him. He is a 5 hdcp so.... Nice thing today about OEMs ( at least Ping) you're not locked to the conventional 3-PW of yesterday. You can order whatever you like. If that's what you really want go for it whatever the brand. Don't let someone else tell you what you have to have to play the game. I saw a picture of Bernhard Langer in Golf Digest, I think, or one of the magazines. He had Adams 6-PW and old Hogan Apex for the long irons. Go figure.

Well boys, I traded the Anser heads for Miura CB-501 heads today (pretty impulsive move). Now I have the decision of playing the cavity backs in the scoring clubs or getting 8-PW Tournament blades. What do you think?

With your swing put the MBs in the scoring irons, this will help you controlling the flight and bring the trajectory down. Plus it looks sweet. If you want more forgiveness, use the CBs all the way through. What shaft?
