Works at the range, too, so you can hone your short game and work on 50-, 60-, 70-, 80-yard shots, etc. A GPS won't tell you have far away the 100-yard sign really is.

I would go Sky caddie if you dont mind a bigger device with a nice screen. Battery life will last you 36 holes. down side is a yearly fee to get all the courses you want but fee's are dropping every year. Garmin watch is a neat one, it is small and convenient plus no one will really see it, but you need to be able to tolerate wearing a watch while playing. there is no yearly fee.

Laser it is good if you are steady, plus if you can locate a target to hit. Great at the range, can be great on the course. Windy days will cause you to sway and miss targets.

I received the Garmin S1 for Christmas. Used it for the first time this weekend and loved it. Very accurate and didnt even notice that I was wearing a watch while playing. Very easy to use and has courses already preloaded. No annual fees either. Once you get to the course you select start round and after about a minute of load time it automatically knows where you are and what course you're playing.

I find it a very handy tool. Gives you the basic information you need to know (front, back and middle of the green). If you are looking for something that can give you distances to sand traps, water hazards, etc. then I would suggest a handheld device.

Good luck with your search!

I have the GolfLogix and a Bushnell. I agree the battery life sucks. But I do like how easy it is... My bushness is great for getting distances - but it's not as quick as just looking at the golflogix. The Skycaddie is a good improvement. As is the upro. I would never get the watch version of a GPS - I can't wear a watch when I play and feel comfortable.

I also have GolfLogix, I used to have a skycaddie, and while dead batteries is annoying, I do like that it uses AAs. So if they are dead, I can usually buy a pair in the clubhouse. WIth the units with built in battery packs, if I forgot to recharge it, I'm just not using it today, back in the bag it goes.

Its not on your list but I have a Sonocaddie V3000 and I love it. Great battery life, no annual fees, one time $30 actiavtion fee for unlimited courses and it also has a nice advanced score card with GIR, Fairways hit, Putts, Sand and of course score and it gives a game breakdown. Got mine on Ebay for $100 delivered and have been nothing but pleased,

This looks like a good option: http://www.inthehole...-WR62/view.html

That looks really interesting...a watch GPS that has hazard information. Would love to see a review of it...

People need to stop saying this.

Every range I go to that is attached to a course has the driving range flags set in Sky Caddy. I don't know if all (or any) stand-alone ranges are mapped.

Also, you can map whatever you want with it. I have a short game area that I mapped on my own.

Sky Caddy maps ranges.

I would go with the Bushnell. Can't beat the pin seeker technology and the ability to use it anywhere without having to deal with downloads. Also, you may want to take into consideration whether or not you are going to be doing any type of sanctioned tournaments, etc. Most don't, but if you do, that may impact your overall decision.

I have owned Skycaddie sg5. Works well. Pros: offers most courses for download, accurate. Cons: yearly fees, screen not good on bright sunny day, have to download new courses off computer. I am giving this gps to wife. Have just ordered Garmin G6. 25,000 courses already loaded, no fees, free upgrades and suppose to be better in sunlight. Hope all their claims are true . Will find out this week when it arrives and will give you an update. Hope this helps you a little.

Had Skycaddie 2.5 just upgraded to SGX....My course has laser finders on the carts and I play with guys who carry both....So I have used the lasers.

I prefer the skycaddie, I can just look at it and have yardages right away. Dont have to worry about the course obstructions blocking me from the target. The laser will give you an exact yardage to pin and gps gives you front/middle/back. This is close enough for my game since I'm hitting to the are the pin is in 99% of the time...

Biggest reason I upgraded to SGX, I'm playing in a lot more tourneys around the state on course I've never played. The SGX will show me the bunker/pond I didnt know was there....

Either way both are better that wasting time looking for sprinkler heads only to find teh yardage plaque has been busted off....

As for the yearly fees?? I believe I pay 29.99 a year....I've wasted $30bucks on lots of othere things I didnt get as much use out of....I've also never had problem not being able to store enough courses....

I am going to sum up this argument for you -

If you are a geeky, nerdy, technology guy buy a gps.

If you are a player buy a laser.

Enough said.

I don't agree. I have, well had, an original upro, it was stolen last week. Anyway my buddy has a laser. We used both during the first few holes of our last round, but after he realized the distances we were getting was neat identical he didn't even bring his laser out. The GPS was so much faster and it was much easier to determine lay up distances. Where I don't deny being geeky I don't think GPS is all that inferior.
