I like Onion Creek a lot. Played there about a weeks and a half ago and thought the greens were great. Played my 2nd round at Falconhead yesterday and didn't like it as much as the first time I played. Too many elevated greens. I'm a sucker for a classic old track like Onion Creek though.

Onion Creek is private right? That course is literally a bicycle ride from the gf's house but I always heard it was private.

they only have 1 course open... so they are letting public on a few times a day on golfnow...

Neat. Never been there so would you say it's walkable?

for me someone who when at home in Scotland only walks - easily.... just one wee climb bit - down from a tee then up to a tee... only thing is you have to miss out an entire hole so be frustrating to walk...

It is private but they have tee times up on Golfnow every now and then. They had a lot of damage with all the flooding earlier in the year so their third nine is closed and being rebuilt. I'd say it's pretty walkable. The elevation changes are more gradual generally, if that makes sense.

Can anyone tell me about Balcones, suppose to be playing in a Member/Guest tournament during Labor Day weekend.

Very short, but can be tight on a few holes. Greens are good, fairways are not the best. It's a fairly easy course.

played valaar today...that's a long drive from bastrop...was worth it to play valaar once...course is top drawer all the way! staff was fantastic...food (b-fast biscuit) was incredible...gatorade was ice cold, lol...

decided to putt only for warm up, cuz i heard the greens are fast...and they are...

2 birdies on the front for a 36...

then i made the turn and messed up a great round...doubled 10 when i tried to crush it, which resulted in a slice, and into the ca-ca..

tripled 13 with the same issue...why do i do that??? stupid...

came to 18 needing a par for 79...hit a draw, but i was out 170, and the pin was up, and it's all carry over water, so i laid up, approach went right at the pin, but fell short..had to chip up and in for par,but was a foot to the right, so an 80...

if i ever, ever do something dumb on a course, i'm gonna kick myself...coulda shot in the 70's, but a foolish decision cost me...not happy about that...36/44...pathetic...

if this course was 40mi instead of 80, i'd be there a bunch!!!!!!!!!!!! give it a go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes...18 at Vaaler is all the hole you want. The tee shot calls for 220-230 draw over that tree on the left...will leave you about 140 to 150 from a flat lie to the flag. If you play a conservative, straight tee shot down the middle...you will be left with that 170-190 approach, all carry over water from a downhill lie. Also usually into the wind.

Good to hear it's still in good shape...I really like Vaaler.

Yep....when you travel, you get to see how mediocre Texas golf really is. Hard to beat the Midwest or Northwest in the summer, and Arizona in the winter. I'm headed to Seattle in 3 weeks!!! Yippee.

And it's crazy how well I play when I visit this part of the country. Fairways are soft, greens are soft, putts roll truer, less wind, everything golf related is just better. While I like playing year round, you just can't beat playing up North in the summer.

I haven't broken 80 back home lately but shot a 74 on par 70 followed by 77 on the second 18 I played the same day immediately following. The CR/Slope is right there with Teravista, but the courses are more receptive and softer. You're ball flat out sticks on every shot. Firing at pins even in risky placements is just easier golf imo.

so, yesterday i'm at gsmith for no good reason, before my round at kizer, and was just fooling around with putters, and oops! there it is...and i like it...but i slept on it...but coudnt stop thinking about it...so i went back this morning before my round at lago, and got it! and am i glad i did! this thing just fits perfect in every aspect...and i did add a bunch of lead tape to the bottom of the shaft cuz i like a heavy putter...

then i took it to the course...zero warm up...

birdied 1,2, and 4!!!!!!!!!!! dropped putts of 3, 8, and 12ft!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 under after 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pinn soft and versa jailbird putter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bogied 5.

doubled 7. forgot what i did there. i think i tried to crush it off the tee and put in in the brush on the side of the hill near the bunker...chipped out...hit next shot long and right, which was wrong...

bogied 9, [email protected] 37... what coulda been...

bunker save on 12...

bogied 13...

birdied 15! the long, uphill par 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dropped a 30ft + bomb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! of course, that's luck, but still...

doubled 16 cuz my alignment was way right...bogied 17 & 18...g-dang-heck...41...but a 78....any score with a 7 in front increases my T-levels...lol

lago needs to do a bunch of watering, cuz it's a bit dry, but certainly playable and a blast....

that's cuz texas golf builds your game in preparation for those easier places, lol...

When I was first just beginning golf last summer I was shooting in the 95-105 range and headed up to Colorado and promptly shot 88, 86 at two different courses. I really think your statement could be true where Texas golf just prepares you. At the time those were my best scores.

I kind of wanna take a trip back up there and play those two courses now that my cap is <10 and see if I can really hammer them.
