Golfers in Austin, TX

only occasionally do i see 5-somes...the issue is slow golfers who dont play ready golf, many of whom really arent familiar with the concept and how to incorporate it into their rounds to speed things up...i would like to see the starters and/or check in people remind everyone to play ready golf...if you're ready, hit it!

I go into rounds at munis (except Brack in SA) thinking it will take 5.5 hours and I never leave pissed.

The thing I find at munis is people who play from the wrong box and take 3 to get to every par 4 and the general lack of talent and more three putts. It just adds up. It is what it is, I don't really know how much more time can be shaved with ready golf and the such.

When I go to more premium daily fee courses where there are better players shooting in the 80-90s then I get around in 4-4.5 hours. I just find it is the nature of where you play and who plays there.

playing during the week at noon can get you around reeeeeal fast! played kizer in 2:15 a coupla times...but, yeah, weekends are gonna be a mess. and you have to know that going in...but when i play with people that obviously arent clued in to ready golf, i hit when i'm ready, complain about the heat, and suggest everyone hit when ready as well....usually by the turn EVERYONE is playing ready...or die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the feedback fellas - I'm hardly judging a relo solely on golf, but it's good to have some perspective on what to expect if it does happen.

Going to be in Austin in a couple weeks for a friend's birthday (never been before!) and am considering doing 36 holes at Star Ranch. Anyone play there recently? Curious about conditions.

If we can't squeeze in 36 we're looking at 18 at either Wolfdancer or Falconhead.

I'll let you know how Star Ranch is in a week. I'm playing in a scramble there next Saturday the 27th. We've had a lot of rain (10-12") the last several days, so the courses should be loving it and should be in tip top shape.

Played Blackhawk yesterday and it does not drain well.. fairways had puddles and bunkers were filled it with water. Greens were good.. hopefully star ranch drains better, it should have recieved the same amount of rainfall

...and, got 18 in again today (sunday) with a rainy forecast! some of kizer's greens are still a mess, unfortunately, but i love playing there, lol...was experimenting a bit, using the 68* on all shots from 30 in...you really gotta swing it, but the ball hits and moves only a few feet, which allows me to go for the flag...only once did i go beyond the flag, and that was from the short grass...hit it solid, just too much...most everything else was from wet rough, and the 68* came thru nicely...i think the lack of much bounce, and just squaring it up and playing it back in my stance, makes it a keeper for me!

I can look out the window and tell you Star Ranch is pretty good right now due to all the rain...and will be immaculate in a couple of weeks. Only exception would be if they punch the greens before then...getting ready for fall. Star Ranch is normally in great shape any given day.

You might consider Avery Ranch too...it's only 15 minutes from Star. Wolfdancer and Falconhead are solid choices....but easily 45 minutes from Austin metro, and in opposite directions from one another.

Just called to make a tee time at Star Ranch for Wednesday and quickly changed my mind because they're punching the greens as I type this. They assured me they'd be good by Saturday's scramble, but I have my doubts. Most greens around here take about two weeks to heel after an aeration. I've seen some courses take even longer.

Our 4th player had to back out on our Saturday scramble. So is anyone up for a scramble on the 27th, this coming Saturday, at Star Ranch? Just to give you heads up, you'll be around a bunch of off duty cops. Our handicaps are 9 (I'm trending down) :taunt: , 8.1 (should be 3 for this sandbagger) and our 3rd is a 7.2 who plays more like a +2 when there's a chance to win something. $90 scramble, 8am shotgun and proceeds go to the family of an Austin Officer killed in the line of duty a few years ago.

Just let me know ASAP

Got the 4th covered, thx

how did it go? were the greens punched?

hope y'all raised a ton for the family...

We tied for 1st scoring a 52 but ended up 2nd place on a scorecard tiebreaker. 52 is a bit unbelievable but they had 2 holes where you rolled dice and scored what you rolled. The dice roll hole was the par 5 5th. We rolled a 1, so that was -4 on that one hole alone. It was also the long drive hole. I hit it about 5 yards farther than the winner, but was 10 feet into the left rough. I measured the winning drive with rangefinder and it was 312 yds. We got to shoot our tee shots out of a potato launcher on the par 4 6th and took an eagle on that hole. 13 birdies on the round, 3 pars, the hole in one on a par 5 and an eagle. Got a free green fee for 2nd place and another for buying a super ticket. The super ticket (raffle tickets) was good for me as well. Won a DVD player and YETI 32oz tumbler, hat and T-shirt in the drawings. Buddy playing in my group won a YETI Hopper 30 ($350 prize). I'm sure they raised a ton of money seeing that the super tickets were $50 each and I'm pretty sure everyone bought at least one. 36 foursomes played and we still finished in 4.5 hours for a 4 man scramble. Had an absolute blast!

Now on to the course conditions. Fairways were great. Rough was fluffy from what I saw (we were in the fairway all day). Greens were a bit bumpy and on the slower side, but still rolled pretty straight. It'll be at least a week before they start rolling normal and probably 2 before they're perfect.

Now I just have to find time to play two rounds at Star Ranch in the near future.

BTW, Headed to South Padre in the morning. Is it worth it to bring the sticks to play this course? http://www.spigolf.com

so padre...8yrs ago we moved here and went to SP the first week...went fishing for the 1st time...got hooked...instead of 150 rounds a yr in phoenix, i played 10 the next 6.5yrs...fishing all the time...started with a bass boat, then a yr later traded it for a center console...2 xmas's ago i started back golfing! lol havent been fishing since.

kizer today...greens are improving, but still spotty...and fuzzy/slow...cost me 4 putts that shoulda gone in...on 18 the wind was pretty strong in my face, so i teed it down to keep it low...i think i forgot to move slightly closer to the ball, cuz i kinda topped it about 70yds! wound up w/ a dbl, for 39-39=78

Ended up leaving the clubs at home since I ran out of room in the trunk. Gonna be a sun filled week and time to get rid of these golf tan lines. Let's go streaking!

That link has NSFW written all over it ;)

I was looking on greenskeeper.org to check on Austin course conditions and everything is green. Is it accurately used for indicating course conditions or is there another site I could be using? Thanks!

It's safe for work. It's a Hal Sutton project about halfway in between Houston and Austin
