Tiger's iron distances

It's all conditions. The tour guys play everything firm and fast. If you are playing a course where everything stops on a dime and has little if any rollout, of course you'll be amazed by their distances. I play in Texas, where everything is firm and fast. I have a poor clubhead speed, but the ball rolls out a ton and I end up with a decent distance. Also, if you've ever played brand new greens, you will get a good idea of how the greens play for these tour players. The ball is impossible to stop, even with a wedge. You have to play for 10+ yards of release. Now add in down wind.

These guys are longer than average, but not the 30-40 yards with irons and 100 yards with driver the commentators make it out to be. If you watch a tournament where it has rained a lot, you will get an idea of what their true distances are.

PGA Tour guys hit it ~80 yards farther than your average 10-handicapper. Now I've always felt short off the tee, but still average about 235 like a scratch golfer. What you mentioned still applies though, maybe they would only hit it 270 or so off our courses, but I doubt it.

Rorys 3wood is past 300. Tour pros have crazy distance. could it be the playing conditions?
Wrong.

Rory averages 303 with the Driver. http://www.pgatour.c...formance-stats/
You're wrong. http://www.pgatour.c...ats/info/?02409

Carry distance as stated in the article. 303 includes roll out.
Did you just say I was wrong and then cite the same stat I used?

I was showing that he averages 303 total with DRIVER. I was rebutting the claim that he averages his 3W over 300.

The pros are not super long at all. Just very accurate. I'm sure they can hit the ball farther if they want but choose to stay very, very much in control for that reason, control. I hit a PW 150 in the air 2 miles from the ocean at the range (verified by rangefinder and trackman), but if I'm on a course I'll most likely hit a 9 iron or 8 iron depending on what I want to do. If I have to carry a tree or go high then I will hit the wedge. It's all about the shot one is trying to play. Only clubs that you really need more power on is driver...because there is no longer club. In reference to this thread, Tiger can probably crank it up by about 10% most likely but he starts to get wild and hits a push the majority of the time. If you want to hit the ball farther, just work on firing your hips faster through exercise and you have to hit the sweet spot ofc.

I'm setting myself up here... Flat out - with his new swing pattern he will hit the ball further period. It's more compact, leveraged and he is using the ground and angles to smash the living hell out of it. You can tell it was difficult (still is) with club selection at times. He has put himself into some difficult up and down situations flying the ball long.

Recently, I made a similar swing change and can attest to the distance increase.
I also agree, the characteristics of the new swing are leading to some massive iron distances.
I agree but it is also causing inconsistency with wedge distance. Mostly from the stronger grip.

That means Rory is gonna get beat hard in the near future. I like Shake and Bake 2.0 though. That movie is an all time classic.

This is pretty accurate. Watching one of Tiger's US Am battles, I remember how blown away Jonny Miller was by Tiger's 5i that "landed like an 8". Now it's a gigantic fade into the Par 5's, but same shot as 20 years ago.

i find it hard to believe that tiger has 180 ball speed and just 285 carry??

with 160 ball speed i have the same carry...
160 ball speed will not carry the ball 285. Not even close. Trackman says 160 ball speed equals 270 carry with perfect spin, launch, and smash. Obviously no one has perfect launch numbers. Real world carry would be 260 or so tops. Maybe your ball speed is higher than 160 idk? But if it's 160 the ball will not carry 285. Unless you play in Denver, then maybe.

It's all about impact positions and lag. The numbers they hit on tv are real and players swing a lot different than they used to. Look at tigers long iron swing in slow mo. He will have 90 degree wrist angle lag in his down swing all the wy untilhis hands are over the ball and then he release the club and still have the club be vertical 3 inches in front of the ball. If you film your swing a lot like I do and start to get any where close to those posistions you'll get a ton of distance and still hit the ball high. Back in January I was hittin my 7 iron 145-150 and spent 20 hours a week for the last 8 months filming my swing and working on getting into those posistions and now if I'm 180 out no wind center pin ill hit 7 iron every time. I'm 6' 150lbs.
