Courses You Can Play on the Ocean?

Recommended Posts

After watching the PGA Championship, I realized that I've never really played golf on the ocean. I started to look into a trip to Kiawah, and may end up just playing there, but I was wondering if there were any other options. Basically, I'm looking for public and/or resort courses anywhere from Maine down to Kiawah ON the water. Even if it's just a couple hole stretch, it would be great to have that experience. I may just google maps my way down the eastern seaboard, but I'm looking for that special GOLFWRX expertise.

It's a rare breed to have an entire course on the ocean.

Here are some I know off the top of my head with *some holes* on the ocean....
Newport Country Club (Private).
Ocean Course at SeaPines/Hilton Head (Public, one hole).
Sankaty Head Golf Club (Nantucket... Private, but Public Invited off season)
Sakonnet (RI, Private)
Misquamicut (Private, RI)
Shennecossett (Public, a couple holes with a water view).

I completely understand. Even if it's just one or two holes, I would be happy. Our traveling men's group is trying to get on Fisher's Island which would be awesome.

I actually played Shenny a couple times.

Thanks. I'll look into those.

In Maine the Samoset Resort comes to mind.

There's also a shortish 9 hole course, Blink Bonnie Golf Links in Sorrento Maine.

Blink Bonnie will probably cost you a tenth of what the Samoset costs.

Harbor Town isn't actually on the ocean if that's what you're looking for, it's on the Calibogue Sound. The Robert Trent Jones course at Palmetto Dunes in Hilton Head has a hole (#10 I think) where the green runs right up to the beach/ocean that is pretty cool...beautiful view from that green out over the Atlantic. Then the tee box for the next hole is next to the beach/ocean...then it's back to normal (no ocean views). It's always in great condition and is open to the public as far as I know.

Kiawah has 4 other courses, 3 of which are very, very nice. Turtle Point, while I don't particularly care for some of the holes, has 3 right on the beach. They aren't the greatest holes on the island but they do give you a view of the ocean. If you can foot the bill it's a great trip. After the Ocean Course I'd play Osprey, Cougar, Turtle and Oak in that order.

See if you can get in on this charity deal at Eastward Ho

http://www.stchristopherschatham.org/

play here if in the area

I played Highland Links as a young teen and don't really remember it. I have family on the cape, but we've been playing around Brewster for the most part. That charity even looks VERY intriguing. I would just want to make sure it wasn't a scramble. I don't mind the occasional scramble for a good cause, but I'd like to play my own ball if possible. I'm being too picky now. Haha.

Thanks for tips. Even though Kiawah would kick my butt, the setting seems so appealing to me. We were going to make a week of it hopefully, so I was looking into staying at the Villas at Kiawah or maybe staying in Charleston proper and just making the day trip down there.

If you can get into Fishers Island Club, I've been known to hand over a nice bottle of scotch for invites to various courses and I wouldn't turn one down for Fishers if offered.... just sayin'.

I happen to love the Ocean Course. It's a visually stunning course and if you play from the correct tees, it's every enjoyable. It's also visually intimidating/confusing, which I'm sure you heard a lot during the PGA...there's actually a lot of room off of the tees.

The other courses are always in impeccable shape so it's a worthwhile trip. If you stay in Charleston it'll take you about an hour to get down to the island. I would recommend staying in Charleston if you want to do anything outside of playing golf. There are a few restaurants on Kiawah but it's hard to beat anything in downtown Charleston.

Although not on the OP's "map" this course should be on everyone's bucket list.

Caye Chapel off the coast of Belize. The course is on an island. The only access is by boat or airplane. Once I played it with 8 other guys, that day, a total of 9 people played the course.

It's amazing.

I'll add you to the already growing list! I'm not sure what it means when the head of the club says he's "working" on Fisher's Island. So it could be anywhere from just had a friendly conversation, or actually is talking cost, details, etc. Hopefully the latter.

We were in Charleston a few years back and loved it so that may be the way to go.

If you're going to Charleston and don't want to pay the prices at Kiawah, you could stay at Wild Dunes and play the Links Course, 17 and 18 have the Atlantic Ocean all the way down the left side.

If you want to splurge on a trip and have a great time, go down to Punta Cana and play the Corales and Punta Espada courses there. Ocean views are everywhere on those courses.

Wild Dunes looks really good. It may make more sense to go for a package deal.

Harbor Town in South Carolina
Not one hole of HT is on the ocean. 17 and 18 are on a river for Calibogue Sound, opposite side of the island from the ocean.

The green of the 15th of the 'Ocean Course' at SeaPines, however, is, and you have to climb a set of stairs if you want to see over the privacy hedges from the beach.

Melrose golf course on daufuskie island you have to take a ferry- great course with 3 holes on ocean
Challenge of Manele on Lanai Island I think you can see the ocean on 17 holes
Kapalua you can see the ocean on like 14 holes
Punta spada in Dominican Republic in punta cana
Ocean course on Fripp Island has a few holes on ocean

Saw your post in another thread about you heading down to Kiawah. I played Turtle Point when I was down there which had a three hole strecth right next to the beach, definitely felt the wind impact.

Enjoy.
Seems like Kiawah may be the place to go. I think I was just being impatient and wanted to see if there was anything closer. I may have to try to get out somewhere on the Cape.

This can't be a golf only trip as it's with the Wifey, so it'll be a normal vacation in which I will try to play twice. Anymore than two times within 5 days probably won't go over well.

If you could only play two courses in the Charleston Area (including the Kiawah Resort) which would you play? I think if we are going to be in that area, I will play the Ocean Course just for the experience. So really, it's what other course would you play? Links at the Dunes, Turtle Point, or any other? @mrfullwm looks like you'd play Osprey, but is there something better outside of Kiawah?
