Skydroid question

A friend of mine has an iPhone 3GS and has the Skydroid app on it. Although all the appropriate options have been made to his phone, he still has a problem locking in on distances. He wakes up the phone a good 20 seconds before reaching his ball but the yardage numbers keep bouncing around and he doesn't know what to believe when he reaches it. Even after reaching the ball, the numbers keep changing and he doesn't know if that number is the final one or if some more bouncing around is gonna happen. The same thing was happening with the Golflogix app. His phone is one of the older models. Do you think that it's the phone's age?

Probably. GPS is only as reliable as the signal it's getting. I don't know much about how well iPhone's GPS systems are, but if it's an older model, it's quite possible it's not up to snuff. My suggestion would be to go into the options and have it keep a constant lock on the GPS so you don't have to be 'reacquired' each time you turn the screen on. I think when you go into Settings, you'll need to turn off 'GPS Power Save Mode'.

I know it's an option on Android version, so it should be on iOS as well.

Accuracy on gps apps is directly related to the phone it self. If the distances are off or inconsistent its not because of the app. His phone may be outdated or the GPS function not working properly.

Tell him to download SwingBySwing which is free, if it happens with that: strike XXX on the phone, which is my guess. There is a lot of variation between phones

I'd be curious to check out swingbyswing, but don't see it in the android market. Don't they make it for android?

Thank you. I found it and installed it. Will give it a try.

It was hard to find because in the Play Store it's listed as "Free Golf GPS & Scorecard"

I have Skydroid on my Galaxy S3 and it works flawlessly. I must have good gps signals in my area. It's pretty accurate and very functional such as the ability to measure drives and the ability to move pin positions and having the ability to get distances to distinct points is an added bonus.

I've compared it to my laser and it's within a couple yards everytime. I hardly ever use my laser anymore and just go with the Skydroid now. I'll use the laser whenever I get that "no way is that correct" thought. Pull out laser and it's within a few yards of what the Skydroid is telling.

I have a GSIII as well, and the GPS in that phone is actually quite good considering Samsung has a bad rep for GPS. I've been quite happy with it as well. I'd take a laser over it any day, as the GPS is only as good as the person behind the computer who set the point. However, it sounds like you're zooming in on the green and putting your finger where you think the pin is, which should be close enough. Most of us on this board, as good as we are, can't differentiate between 132 and 134 yards when swinging anyway.

I think Skydroid is the best GPS for Android because it's a one time fee (stupid cheap) and you can modify and create your own courses online. It's simple to do and I usually go on there before I play a course and make sure the points are where I think they should be. If they're not, I'll change them and then download the course right afterwards to ensure I get the copy I made myself.

Great feedback on the app. I just sold my laser and was looking for an Android alternative. I will try this out. I have the GS II, so hopefully I won't run into any issues.
