I certainly like the look of scotch in a rocks glass (might have something to do with my love for a good old fashioned) but I also picked up a Glencairn to really get into the habit. I think I'll use the Glencairn to start a bottle and experience it all but move to a rocks glass once I know what I'm getting and just sip to relax.

been too long since i've posted in here... damn near finished the auchentoshan12, but have moved on the tomatin18, so i can build up the number of scotches i own (with only 2 fingers left in each).

tomatin18 is a highland single malt. i've had the 12 and 15, which i bought primarily because their prices were so 'attractive' (read: cheap). the same can be said for the reason why i bought the 18.

but, this is totally different than the younger iterations. very subtle, no real 'kick', but pleasant and a longer finish. delightful for a monday dram. needless to say, my early impressions are favourable... very favourable indeed.

after basically wasting $43 on the tomintoul16, i am relieved that this is not more of the same.

Has anyone else tried the balvenie 15 yr single cask? If you like sweeter scotches, it's a must try. I'd say its a more mellow, more mature carribbean cask. Honey finish. A nice 'change of pace' scotch on this Saturday evening.

Makes watching 'titanic' before the action sequences nearly tolerable.

I bought a Glenlivet 16 Nadurra the other day, not sure if we've discussed. 56% alcohol...it's pretty strong , i've only had one glass so far

anyhoo, scratch and souledge seemed to like it. i believe scratch somehow compared it to wasabi, in a good way. i've never had it, but i have to look into it now.


affordable scotches on my list to buy:
- smokey joe
- cutty sark (going to see my FIL soon, it's his favorite)
- glen grant

still searching for the $30-$40 unicorn bottle that will supplant lag16 as the no. 1 seed.

i am making a 90 minute round trip pilgrimage to get smokey joe this upcoming weekend. it helps that they will have 40 other scotches to ponder. will report back with any info.

maybe i tried it too early in my scotch 'education'... but i'm soured on laphroaig. for lack of a better word, it tasted 'grassy' to me. describe why you like it so i can give it another go... it was incredibly unappealing when i had my first dram of it.

I understand that this one isn't for everyone.
For me, it reminds me of the smell oft dad's old hunting gear. Smells of campfire and tobacco.
It's a smooth scotch with that earthy-smokey taste that I have come to love. I'm not much for describing specific tastes but I do know what I like.
Maybe it's more of a memory trigger for me but I still love the taste of this scotch.

we've been in here touting our favorites, and why. what are some of [i][b]the worst single malts[/b][/i] you've had?

- toumatoul16: everything you need to know is in it's slogan. 'the gentle dram.' absolute garbage. flat and lifeless.
- laphroaig10: felt like i was eating it, more than drinking it. purely from coheed's description, i will give this another go at some point.
- glenlivet15 (french oak): tastes like sweaty french armpits. hairy sweaty french armpits.

two blends i have to mention:
- JW red: not even fit for mixed drinks. tear-inducingly bad.
- JW blue: so overpriced and overhyped. not worth it. the gold and even the black are eminently drinkable.

Eagle, it is the French cask one, and you're right, it's not one of my favorites BUT one of my rules when drinks are free is to never complain about the quality or quantity of a free drink!
That being said, it's not one of my faves for sure.
Others that I don't care for are in line with Eagle...anything Jonny Walker just doesn't do it for me. Tried the red, black, blue etc. makes no difference; I just don't like 'em.
