Have you guys messed around with many Japanese Whiskeys? I know this is the Single Malt thread but the Japanese really love their singles malts from what I have gathered and they are very passionate about trying to recreate good SM's. The Hibiki that I bought is a blended that I just purchased on a whim while at Costco grabbing some stuff. Man it's really really good, might have a better nose than any of my SM's, it's a little sweet but like a burning sweet. It's an awesome change up to the rotation for sure.

No, but I saw monkey shoulder at my local. Smokey Joe was all sold out when I made the trek. Very sad day for me.

I drank some Oban 14 last night and I almost poured it out after drinking the Hibiki for the last week. Hibiki has climbed to near the top of my list.

I've had Nikka, it was called like 12 year pure malt or something. I wasn't crazy about it. But my style is more the lightly peated stuff

Grangestone 18yr picked up today had a little test earlier smooth good tasting and $55 cant beat it for 18yr

i've been more on wine lately....but today i figured i'd go with a little bit of the harder stuff. But i chose Jack's Single Barrel over my Scotch collection.

Right now i've got an Aberlour 12, a Isle of Jura Prophecy and a Glenlivet Nadurra.....aswell as the Jack's.

I keep a pretty small collection

I like the Superstition too....you ever have Prophecy? Maybe my favorite sub 100$ scotch (canadian dollars)

Not quite yet but based on how much I enjoyed the Superstition; I'll be sure to give the Prophecy a good go!

Costco - it's delicious and I think I am pretty picky. It's awesome on hot days because it's not super peaty or overly sweet. It's sweet like a raisin not like toffee.

cardoustie - i'll only drink 2 types of gin: hendricks (for when i'm feeling a bit wonky and want to go off the rails) and tanqueray no. 10 (which is leagues better than any other gin i've had).

got some crap news today, and thus i am settling into my 4th finger of oban 14 this evening for a too-brief period of contemplative quietude.

it's helping a little bit.

yes! auchentoshan 12 just got restocked at my local the other day. and it's on sale for $31. i bought 2 bottles and am considering 2 more. triple distilled perfection imho. it's going down surprisingly well with animal crackers this evening.

auchentoshan 12 is my new go to. doesn't supplant the lag16 as the no. 1, but it's less than half the price and [i]nearly[/i] as good. i had back to back glasses of auch12 and oban14 and i vastly preferred the auch12. lot more going on there. the oban seemed to wilt under the comparison - almost too smooth and a little thin.

it's going to be tacos tonight, so no scotch. i'm macerating fruit in my base for this evening's sangria.

Couldn't find Hibiki but did see some Yamimi (or something close to this) on one of my recent trips overseas. I'll keep an eye open for it for sure!

Funny how the posts have slowed to a crawl now that the weather has changed... I've always been a "scotch in the winter", "gin & tonic in the summer" guy myself!

I came looking on here because my cousin gave me a bottle of Balvenie Doublewood 17 and I wanted to see if it was any good... after reading the thread I'm wondering what I ever did for him to deserve such a gift! I haven't seen him in years!

My main is Macallan 12 and I have a Glenfiddich 18 hanging out for specials but I'm looking forward to getting a bit peatier this fall. Lag 16 is definitely in the queue to get it rolling. I've never been this excited to go to the liquor store!

It pains me to see this thread sink into the abyss... The BD 17 is really really good.... I recently took a trip to Seattle and did multiple tasting flights at a few whiskey bars. Arran 14 and Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask were two of my favorites. The true nugget of the dozen or so whiskeys that I tried was Yoichi 10. That stuff is just amazingly good.

Here was how we spent the 4th... I have not had a sip since.... The Grangstone is the best $25 bottle that I have ever had.

Scratch, I swear we were separated at birth. As sweeter scotches go, the carribbean cask is always at the top of that list. Never thought you'd like it, as you said you prefer the smoke and peat of islays.

Try the balvenie single barrel when you get a chance, for a slightly stronger, slightly less sweet (yet still very pleasing) single malt. Drinkin my way through a bottle of it as we speak.

I got some Dun Bheagan 8 from some people for my birthday.

It is not for the faint of heart. Heavy ash and peat. Didn't like it at first but find myself going back.

Hahaha... Yeah the Caribean Cask is really good. There is only one scotch that I have tried and not liked. Single Barrel is next on my list. Ever since the 4th and polishing off two bottle I have been alchole free.
