an early favorite of mine and definitely helped with my scotch education. 'appropriately priced' is the thing i'd say about it, without any negative connotation.

i LOVE HIBIKI! Probably better than most scotch malts I've tried. zoo clean tasting.

my personal favourite is a nikka 21. one of the smoothest I've tried. can stand with the best scotch malts around!

The correct answer is both... Don't tell anyone but sometimes when I fly solo and drink enough Hibiki I will put on my shinny grey suit and run around the house doing karate kicks yelling HIBIKI in mid flight, like a gangster from a Jackie Chan movie.

Hibiki today, aberlour tomorrow!

Side note: Does that stove ever get used?
Sure it does. It's only about 4 years old, and glasstops are the easiest to keep clean. The one before this one got damaged with a leaky ceiling when the ceiling fell and cracked it (whole new kitchen other than fridge, actually).

Oh, and my reviews:

Started with the Hibiki 12. Smooth over the tongue, smell the fruity aroma as it swirls. Nice sweet start and finish. I've never been dissatisfied with anything from Suntory, and this is no different. This will be a nice complement to its Yamazaki 12 and 18 brethren on the shelf.

Aberlour 16 Double Cask. Starts good, but the finish leaves something to be desired, like there should be more for a double cask of 16 years. I mean, I'm not going to kick it out of bed, it's also strong of sherry and also a very pleasant aroma, but comparing to the 12? I expected more. Didn't get more. Stick with the 12 and save your money.

i bought a Glenlivet 18 today....it's not bad. I've had Glenfiddich 18 before

I was actually going to buy the 21yr old Glenlivet, but on the website the 18 actually sounded better, and it's 60$ cheaper here in Canada. So i figured why not....i'm not blown away or anything, though it is very good. I'm just not sure i'd buy it over some others that are 20-30$ cheaper

I always find the lesser known brands to be better / more interesting / unique.

I've never been a fan of the Glenlivet's, Glenfiddich's and Highland Park's

I do have a buddy that collects only Highland Park's, I'll have to ask him how many different ones he has

No a fan of any Glenns.... I actually put all of mine back in their cans and away, someone told me to try them again in a few years and they might taste better.
I didn't think scotches (and cognacs, rums, etc) changed much after they were bottled as glass has nothing to offer in terms of taste/flavour!

I know some bottles do tend to get better after they are mixed with air and the bottle sits over time. I notice this with Laphroaig Quarter Cask. A freshly opened bottle tastes different than the last dram.

Sounds like my kind of experiment!
Now if I can only leave a half-full bottle of scotch sit long enough for this to work!
