Not sure I saw this one GlenGoyne single malt mentioned - very nice and smooth (no water or ice to "kill it") Visited the distillery in Scotland - the preferred malt for Royalty to serve. No peat used in process - great taste!

+1 here, GlenGoyne makes an excellent scotch and the distillery tour is a must for anyone visiting Glasgow.
I'll be picking up a bottle on my visit there tomorrow!

Is there golf in the plan? Safe travels! Kind of envious here!

If you visit a scotch distillery in Glasgow you have to play golf!

On to my question. My dad's birthday is coming up this weekend and we are both big scotch drinkers, I usually go over ice, he's a neat. I frequently buy 12 year Glenfiddich or glenlevit. I want to buy a "special" bottle for this weekend. Maybe a 15 or 18 year? Definitely no peat at all. 100$ range. Any suggestions?

If you drink a lot of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich you can't go wrong. I've had the 18yr old in both brands and they are very smooth and under 100$

How much is the Glenlivet 21? It's 150$ here so probably around 100 there....

i've recommended the balvenie caribbean cask more times than i care to count. unblemished record: i've never heard a single complaint about it. :)

note: being finished in old rum casks definitely makes this a sweeter scotch, yet it still has silky subtle flavor.

damn my mouth is watering just thinking about this scotch, and i have none in the cabinet.

That sounds incredible. It looks like its only 70$ or so a bottle too.... I might have to buy one for myself as well. Thanks for the input!

glad to help. i swear, balvenie should have me on their payroll with the number of times i've plugged/purchased their excellent products. #balvenie ;)

another option: a slightly less sweet, and very unique scotch is the balvenie single barrel. 15 years in a sherry cask, individually numbered bottles, and each barrel slightly different than any other. i often refer to it as the caribbean cask's more stoic big brother. makes the similarly aged macallan taste like a cooking sherry by comparison.

Hi guys!
Here are a few pics from my visit to the Whiskey Shop in Manchester. Walked out with a nice bottle of Caol Ila 18.
On to Glasgow tomorrow!
Unfortunately no golf on this trip as they are short layovers but hope to have a few this summer.
Cheers!

Yessssss, finally made it home. Enjoying a couple fingers of Jura Superstition. Ya I've mentioned it before but...there is nothing I love more than coming home to my bed, wife, kids and a nice Superstition after a long time away from home.

I actually prefer wine after a tough day, but the Balvenie Caribbean cask and older Glenlivet's (18 and 21) are really growing on me in terms of favorite scotches

The Jura Prophecy i really liked too but its less and less my style these days, as i move away from the peaty stuff

Eagle has me thinking...what's YOUR (everyone) gold standard.
I understand that not all scotches are alike and that we should try new scotches with open minds but...what is that one bottle that can't help but judge/compare all new scotches that you try?
I'm sitting at a bar looking over many bottle of really scotch. I've never tried Dalwhinnie, and I know that when I do; I'll be comparing it, in earnest, to Lauvalin 16.
So...what's your gold standard?

2011 Lagavulin Special Edition Cask Strength. The bottle that taught me to love smoke and peat and brine.

The bottle was a gift from a client, I hated it at first sniff/sip... And then, as luck and time and a comfortable leather chair made possible, I grew to like it... Then love it.

The bottle was gone too soon as I shared it with the other scotch aficionados in my family who went through a similar process of getting to know this challenging dram.

I've never tasted it's equal again.

For an everyday/week sipper, give me a glass of Macallan 12 or Balvenie 12 Doublewood and a nice cigar around a fire and I'm as happy as can be. For a special occasion/celebration/horrid week, give me Balvenie 21 yr with the cigar and fire. All is then right in the world. Cheers!

If anyone is interested in a wonderful whiskey festival at the end of November each year combined with some wonderful golf in the south of Scotland, Dumfries. Please check out www.drambusters.com for £20-00 you get to sample over 400 different whiskey from all over Scotland from all distillers. This is what I came across the Tomatin distillery the 15,18 & 21 yr old are well worth a try. So between 11: 00 & 17:00 it's basically sample as much whiskey for as possible for 20 quid and vote on the best whiskey sampled, if you are brave to explain to the spouse the state you are in let alone the whiskey you have purchased and failed to smuggle in the drinks cabinet, bottles can be purchased at reduced costs and shipped if required. If anyone is interested I would be only to happy to help.
