San Diego bucket list complete, off to Myrtle

Recommended Posts

My end of active duty service with the United States Marine Corps (only 8 yrs and a few deployments....lol) ends in 2 weeks and I'm leaving San Diego for Myrtle Beach, SC.

Not looking for sympathy but I will miss the SoCal weather dearly, not looking forward to the scorching heat and humidity.

Just looking to go out with a bang and play a few nice courses prior to leaving.

I am considering Oak Creek and Maderas but am open to other options if the locals have some better ideas.

I have played Torrey, Coronado, Balboa, La Jolla CC, PGA West Nicklaus and Palmer private, Telaga, RedHawk, CrossCreek, Mt Woodson and all Military courses in the area to name a few.

Considering:

Maderas

Oak Creek

Barona

Aliso Viejo CC

Journey

Oak Quarry

And whatever else you may suggest

Let me know gents

Nothing would be more special than playing Torrey South your last day in SoCal. Just my opinion.

Thanks for serving our country :).

Second Rustic Canyon if you get up near the LA area at all. Great course.

Rustic Canyon looks amazing and has very affordable rates unfortunately I cant really afford the travel time with only 13 days left prior to my move.
My proposed weekend is as follows

Friday- Aliso Viejo CC
Saturday- Journey @ Pechanga
Monday- Oak Quarry
Tuesday- Barona (as long as a fellow WRXr can join me)

Dont fret about Rustic. Played it again today as a practice round for the SCGA Am Qualifier there tomorrow....greens are still bumpy, slow and furry. It's really too bad because it takes away from the links style of the course.

Check Torrey Pines off the list

Played the North course today with "Double or Triple" and had a great time

Conditions were excellent but pace of play was terrible, we waited on almost every hole

And it was actually chilly, pants and long sleeves for me :taunt:

Today was great. Course was in great shape, day wasn't too hot and the company (FutureSuper) was great. We tee'd off around 1:45pm and finished close to 4.5 - 5 hours later. Met Tony today for the first time and wish we had teed it up before. He is a very humble yet excited guy. He hit some very good shots today but still managed to have a great attitude about the slow round. He put up with my BS the whole round. Here are a few pictures from the round. While we didn't play the PGA TOUR markers we did play the Blue or Men's Tips.

View to Pacific Ocean from 1st fairway.

9th Green. Here in two but screwed myself behind a tree after my best drive of the day

Lastly, Tony it was great to meet you in person after trying many tee times before. Round was great and the 18th hole 3 wood and wedge shot was great to witness in person. Didn't get to tell you in person by Thank you for your service the past 8 years and best of luck to you in Myrtle Beach. Hopefully we can tee it up on Tuesday. Also thanks for having my back when that guy called me out on 15th after my truly pured slice drive. :swoon:

Journey @ Pechanga was insane today
Hands down the most beautiful course I have ever played and quite possibly the most difficult as well.
The course layout was challenging and shot placement was crucial.
Greens were lighting fast IMO, apparently something I'm not used to.
However the wind was the biggest factor of the day, a steady 20 mph with gusts near 40 at times made a few holes impossible for me.
A pured 5 wood into the wind sometimes fell at 150yds
And a 6 iron had potential to carry 220
The views and perfectly manicured course made for a great experience but we barely finished even with a 220 tee time
It's hard to list my favorites holes because they all had something memorable but definitely 5,6&7 on the front and 14,16,17&18 on the back .
Oh and the practice facility and cushy cart seats were icing on the cake

I love journey ALWAYS in great shape with the casino money and the govs money. I wish i could play it everyday. You can mix up the tees and it changes that course so much. The shot selection is so dramatic. Did you play 6 all the from the back box at 490? Not a hard hole but with wind you hit it and hold on lol

Played Oak Quarry today and I'm upset I hadn't played it sooner.
The course was in great shape, had some amazing views and some very fun holes
Overall I was impressed with course conditions until the back 9, no one told us the greens had recently been punched, no top dressing just lots of holes. They were a little slow and although that may have helped my score I really think we should have been told prior to the round.
Although I don't usually care about bunkers they were in pretty bad shape, most had zero sand, just hardback dirt
They had drinking water on the course, pace of play was good and the Marshall was present

If I had more time in SoCal I would definitely go back
IMO the green fees are very reasonable for the quality of course and staff

Yup 1 and 2 on this list are on my top favorites...

I'd skip Oak Creek too. It looks nice but all it is, is the poster child for completely overpriced OC courses. Very pedestrian layout. Memorable courses/challenging:

1. Pelican Hill
2. Industry Hills Eisenhower
3. Rustic Canyon
4. Oak Valley
5. PGA West Stadium

I played the Golf Club of California in Fallbrook today and it was extremely nice.
Not sure if I would put it over Journey or Oak Quarry, but I am returning to SD next month and intend to bring my west coast friends out there.
Played Twin Oaks yesterday and could take it or leave it.
nice...greens rolling good there? Funny how different perspectives are; have a buddy who is a member up there @ Arrowwood and claimed Golf Club was in bad shape right now, love that course better than any in the N. County area
It was kinda funny.
Greens looked a bit hairy, but rolled out 3ft more than you would have guessed.
And even tho I teed off at 7am, there was someone in front of me who was choosing not to repair ball marks!
Course was in tremendous condition.
My biggest complaint might have been inconsistent marking of sprinkler heads. Some marked, some not.
