Replacing ferrule(s) without pulling the clubhead

Here is my dilemma. I would like to install custom ferrules on my irons. Obviously, since I am installing custom ferrules, I care about the appearance of the club. With that being said, I don't have the equipment to pull the clubheads, remove the old ferrules, install the new ones and then reinstall the clubheads. More so, I don't really want to drop $15-25 per club (plus the cost of the ferrules) to have someone do it for me. Yes, I want my cake and I want to eat it too (btw, what good is cake if you can't eat it anyway?)

I did some research and have read various threads on split ferrules and also a method by which you cut slit in a normal ferrule, slide it on the club and then "heal" it with acetone. ( http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/872232-split-ferrules/ ). As stated above, I am a bit particular about how my clubs look, yet I don't want to drop a lot of $. It seems like most people prefer the slit method over the split ferrule option. The method seems like a viable option for installing custom ferrules without dropping a lot of $; however, there just isn't much information out there on it. I don't want to do it if it is going to look awful. My thought is that the section with the "healed" slit can be turned so that it can't be seen at address. Still, even if it isn't observable at address, I don't want the slit to be conspicuous otherwise, e.g. sitting in my bag. I don't want my clubs to look like Dr. Victor Frankenstein worked on them. "It's ALIVE!!!"

Has anyone tried this method? If so, do you have any pictures of the finished product? Video of the procedure? Can you provide some detail on the steps/procedure for using this method? What are the pitfalls that one must be vigilant about avoiding when using this method? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I cant see this going well... Only way to ensure a proper look is to pull the heads IMO.

This is a pretty easy DIY with steel shafts (as there is very little risk of ruing the shafts and no need for using a shaft puller, etc.)

All you'll need is: a heat gun or torch, hook knife, a little sand paper, actone, proper epoxy, your ferrules

Propane torch = $20 (or even less)

You will need a hand drill or similar to dig the old epoxy out of the tip of the shaft.

100 grit sand paper can be rolled up and used to clean the hosel.

Bottom line is you do not need to spend much money to do simple club building work.

Do the job right or don't do it at all. Go to Youtube and watch some videos on how to pull a club head. It's stupid easy.

All the above are correct.

"Healing" and looking "Custom" have VERY DIFFERENT MEANINGS!

I work on clubs a lot and I can tell you "healing" a ferrule (for me) is not easy and it doesn't look the same as new.

Buy a torch, you can get epoxy small job packets from golfworks.com cheap. Shouldn't cost you more than $50 give or take to complete this job yourself.

Use the torch on the wedges when your finished with the irons. ;)

Thanks for the input folks. It appears that the answer is unanimous. I have a Mizuno combo set: MP59 4-7 & MP64 8-PW w/ Project X shafts. Are there any special precautions that need to be taken with forged irons? Thanks.

Don't heat the hosel until its red hot. That goes for cast clubs too though! :)

Tell you what, if you're uncomfortable doing it, I'll do it for you for no charge including documenting each club's swingweight and putting them back to the identical swingweight they're currently at. All you've gotta do is get them to me with the new ferrules.

I don't know where you're located at, so it might be prohibitive for you to ship them cost wise, but maybe there's a WRXer in your area that could help you out as well. Just thought I'd throw it out there and try to pay it forward.

I have tried the split ferrule trick, with acetone to heal the cut. The best I can say is that if you do this on 20 or 30 clubs a day, you can probably get pretty good at it after a while. I didn't have much luck with it. And I only had a few of those classic old ferrules. So I gave up on it as not worth my time (and I am retired, so my time isn't worth a lot). I did get a few on and healed, but they were not pleasing.

I do all my clubwork and have seen many clubs worked on through our club builder at work who has 20+ yrs of experience. Never have I heard of or seen a "split ferrule." The whole idea seems like a train wreck waiting to happen. For a ferrule to fit it needs to be snug. Cutting and glueing a ferrule up isn't gonna stand the amount of vibration from repetitive use. Heck ferrules that are put on the traditional way give away after some time on their own. Cutting a ferrule only to glue it back is complete waste of time and supplies. I guarantee you they will fall off within 25 rounds.

I'll keep my opinions regarding colored ferrules to myself but if you must use them do them the proper way.

There's only one way to do this..... and that is to do it correctly. Just like any job in life. Do it right the first time so your not paying 2- 3x's more to correct the initial screw up. JMHO.

I am going to watch a few videos and read up on reshafting. Sounds like a pretty simple process and based on what I am reading here, I won't need much equipment. If anyone has a favorite instructional site/video/link, please post it.

Not a fan of colored ferrules I am guessing, Bpark? Haha. I get it. I had always been a black grip and black ferrule guy up until recently. To each their own.

Thanks again folks.

They've been selling them for years: http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_LE9004

Others too, but I knew exactly where theirs are located on their site. Never used one but they've existed for a while.

I think I might go ahead and make a video on pulling a steel shaft....And prolly do a follow up on blowing grips on.

I think this is the OP best option and a nice gesture from Rookie. When the OP pulls the heads off and the clubs have been swing weighted with lead powder he'll be stuffed when trying to put them back together exactly the way they were.

Don't give up so easy OP!

I'm thinking that a little midnight raid on your girlfriends nail polish and BAAM, you've got colored ferrules.

You've gotta think "outside the box" with "laser focus" or you'll never climb the ladder to management at the quickie-mart!
[/quote]

Why use my girlfriend's nail polish when I could use my own? Probably could finish the whole job during my midnight shift at the quickie-mart.
