Wilson 1200LT Limited Edition Set 1979

Recommended Posts

I believe that the earliest 1200 ,around the mid-late seventies and early 80's, were one of Wilson's first foray's into investment cast, perimeter weighted, game improvement clubs. The woods were laminated and had an insignia/weight imbedded in the insert covered in clear plastic. I believe the 1200's were pro-line game improvement clubs at least until the early 80's when the "Reflex" irons were introduced. Some time after that the 1200's were available at other retail outlets and eventually became a lower line. Initially though, they were top line, but game improvement.

Those look the 70's-early 80's version that would have been around $400+/- for 8 or 9 irons and 3 or 4 woods-about the same as Wilson Staffs of the same period. My dad got me a set of Staffs while I was in college about that time. I believe it was $260 for 2-PW and $160 for 1-3-4-5 woods.

Shaft over hosel was pretty much a late 70s early 1980s phenomena I believe. Agree with Freddie C that these were probably early 80s, based on the quality of the finish. Probably retail or storeline.
I have noted in some of these discussions that there is sometimes a rush to judgment, with assumptions being made about entire lines of clubs. Not sure about the 1200s, but have noted some debates about Wilson X31s and MacGregor DX, both of which started out as top-of-the-line pro clubs, before descending into netherworld of cheap alloy casts.

this appears to be the case here too . started as top line- ended up as store brand. one of the above posters was right on . were more expencive than the staff model at first but as sales lagged-price dropped to mid level status.the old maltby golf club idenity guide is a most valuable resource for now vintage clubs. this book was intended as a trade in guide for golf shops.sadly they no longer print this book but its still for sale at golf works -at least i think so still

I bought my Wilson 1200 LT irons in 1983 at Herman's Sporting Goods in NYC. $180 for the irons, 3-PW. The S1 (there was also an S2 that was probably more of a lob wedge) did *not* come with the set, and I had Herman's order it for me.

The woods set was 1-3-5, and boasted a "Strata Block" face. Don't remember the price but I think that they also set me back $180 for the three clubs.

At that time in Herman's, it was either the Wilson 1200 LT, or the hideous Spalding Executive, with the massive embossed "EXECUTIVE" in the cavity. Reminded me of the "Chiller" in the old Saturday night "Chiller Theater."

Herman's. That brings back some memories from my youth. They were a sports store, but not low budget. I remember my Mom purchased my brother, who was in High School at the time, a pair of Nike sneakers when they first came out. I remember Pops slamming his hand on the Kitchen table when they got home, "Forty Dollars!?? Forty Effing dollars for a pair of sneakers!!?? FORTY DOLLARS!!??" What a great memory. Good times!

My Dad shook his head "no" until his neck got stiff when I asked for a pair of $20 Converse vans in the '60s. Keds were $7.99, so Converse was out. But man, I wanted those high tops.

And Herman's, I lived there. They had what seemed to be a six-foot-high metal rack of golf clubs--all store products, 1200s, Golden Bear, many others. There was no confidence whatsoever back then in cavity backs or perimeter weighting and the phrase "game improvement" clubs didn't yet come to the mind of the marketing genius who suckered a lot of us in. I can't imagine marketing 1200s to pros--but maybe they did, I don't know. I only know my perception of things back then.

One thing I remember as vividly as the birth of my first son is the launch of the Ping Eye 2 irons. Welcome to the future! (No one said that, but that is what happened.)
