Yes, as long as you have an official handicap of 0.4 or lower. Hence the name the US "Open"...

 

By the way if you go to the USGA's website you can find all the info you want about their championships.

Definitely open to the public for spectators, yes. I caddied for a buddy of mine last week.

While I guess it happens, I've never heard of anyone going to watch a qualifier so I guess my mind went the other way

Won't see many spectators, those that are out there are mostly family and friends of the players. Good way to see some quality golfers up close, usually a few tour players in the final's qualifier.

that would actually be a neat requirement for a tournament ticket ... can you hit a driver 180 yards or more? ... can you hit a sand wedge from 100 yards to at least 30 ft? ... rory gets an exemption since he's already a tour pro ...

There is usually one or more qualifying sites every year that are within close proximity of that weeks PGA Tour stop. They tend to have pretty strong fields since a number of guys will play it before teeing it up at the tour even later in the week.

 

The one in Ohio in a few weeks will have a strong field as well since it's right before The Memorial.

Seems like a lot of LIV guys are at the Dallas qualifier.

 

What are the course setups for these qualifiers?  Do they even try to replicate U.S. Open conditions or is a simpler track?

Some setups are better than others, but I'd say overall they would be comparable to a KF Tour level event. They'll be in good shape, but no where near what the USGA does at the Open.

 

Getting a course in "US Open shape" is almost a sure fire way to ruin a golf course unless you have a phenomenal and highly intelligent maintenance staff.

That is a really solid field.  With all the PGA Tour and LIV players in that field at just a single site, it makes Talor Gooch’s decision not to try to qualify even more lame.

Thanks.  Figured it was probably of the KFT variety.  Definitely don't have the game myself to try to qualify but have known some friends that gave it a go back in high school and college and failed.

 

One part of these qualifiers that I love reading about are the idiots that lie about their handicap at the local level and get exposed, shooting like 140+.

Have a buddy who was in a US Open qualifier years ago and was paired up with a guy who shot a smooth 62 on the front 9. Said he had to use the restroom at the turn, haven't seen him since. My buddy played the mini tours for a few years, Florida and the Carolina's. Still shoots 68-72 and lightens my wallet. ☺

Patrick Reed isn’t everyone’s favourite golfer but it’s farcical that he needs to qualify after making the cut in 10 consecutive majors and 19 of the last 20

 

Meanwhile, Adam Scott (my favourite golfer) has been playing poorly for nearly 2 years but is exempt from qualifying largely on the basis of points earned from sponsor exemptions to elevated events with no cuts
