Legends Golf Resort Myrtle Beach

A few quick question for those of you who have stayed and played here:

1) What did you not like/enjoy about the resort and or courses? It seems the only negative feedback that I can find from anyone's prior posts was about the sometimes glacial paced 5 hour rounds.

2) Would you do anything different or recommend doing something specific to make the experience better next time you went? For example stay at a certain place on the resort?

We stayed at the resort about 4-5 years ago. Really no complaints other than what you stated on pace of play. Very nice facility and practice areas. Courses were all in great shape back then, I doubt that it's changed much.

We rented 3 units close to each other and had 3-4 people per unit. The larger unit defaulted as the poker room in the evening. We ate at the local bar restaurant and the food and drinks were good.

I can't remember which course (Moorland or Heritage) but 18 on one of them is a drive-able par 4 however has a canyon bunker in front of the green due to the elevation of the green. If you land in it, it's a tough shot out due to the height of the green.

The three courses at Legends are good. Play Heathland first as it is the most forgiving. The condos on site are clean and comfortable and have everything you'll need, but they are not luxurious. The Ailsa pub on site in the middle of the condos, is a nice place for pub food dinner and to hang out with your buds. The breakfast buffet at the clubhouse is a madhouse, liken a cattle call. Try to be the first ones out in the morning and you won't have to worry about pace of play. Just don't be the ones playing slow :-) I just played Parkland last week in 3 hours Off-season in MB is a blast and very inexpensive but you're taking your chances with the weather.

Sabram said it perfectly.
I played Moorland yesterday with 2 older gentlemen in 4 hours so normal pace is possible but dependent upon the day, hit or miss.
All 3 courses are among the best layouts Myrtle Beach has to offer especially when price is considered.
I cannot comment on the condos but I imagine a group of guys playing golf and having a good time would not complain about beer, food and lots of golf within walking distance.

I'm pretty sure that's Parkland, but it's been a few years. I thought it was 9 rather than 18, but perhaps I started on the back and got them mixed up.

It's been a few years since I was there, but I love Legends. It's like an all-inclusive golf campus. If one so desired, one would never need to leave the grounds. Restaurant/pub, 3 courses, comfortable condos, outstanding practice area. They even have a golf school (that I attended and recommend highly) if that appeals to anybody in your group.

Moorland in particular is one of my favorite courses in Myrtle Beach - and one of my very favorite finishing holes on a golf course.

The courses are in excellent shape and well taken care of all the time. The Staff is super friendly and helpful as all get up! Has nice practice green and nice driving range. these to me are must play courses, Heathland reminds me a Links style course, Moorland is difficult and challenging but fair if played smartly. Parkland is a super nice course with good length and challenges.

Spring for Barefoot if you can swing it. Legends just feels like a golf factory. Perfectly nice courses and people, but lacks that next level feeling. You get what you pay for I guess.
Truer words have never been typed. Barefoot has no equal from a service standpoint and the courses are incredible, especially The Dye Course. Spend the extra money and have a golf experience rather than just playing golf.

My last visit to the Legends was pretty bad but that was 3 years ago. Unhappy and gruff employees, badly leaking clubhouse roof, poor course conditions.

From more recent rewiews it seems they have turned things around (except for pace of play).

The layouts are good and when the course condtions are good it is a great place. Food was always decent. Never stayed there though.

Legends simply cant be beat pricewise. The Barefoot courses might have better service - I've only played there twice - but you absolutely pay for it.

The range and practice facilities at Legends are absolutely first rate. I also loved that the range ball machine at the range has a slot for your room key. Insert room key, out come free balls.

It's 16 at moorland. Something like 270 from the back tee. It's a par 4 but right of the green drops off pretty good. If you don't hit the green off the tee or leave it greenside you'll struggle to make par.

For the OP, you're better off just staying at the Legends. Free range balls and a great practice facility. I cant advise you on where to stay in there, unless you can rent Larry Young's house off of the back of the range. That thing is HUGE.

Not to sound too much like a loser, but what is it like doing Legends/Barefoot as a solo for 2/3 days? I need to get away, and my friends are all booked. Is everyone a foursome?
This time of year I'm sure you could play alone if you really wanted to.
The last 2 days I was a loser (single) grouped with other singles to make a foursome but the tee sheet is fairly open late morning and late afternoons if you like to be alone.

I forgot to add my 2 cents on Barefoot even though the OP didn't ask.
It's nothing special
The Dye course is almost identical to Moorland
Green fees are double what Legends charges without breakfast, lunch and 2 drinks.
And here's the kicker....5+ hour rounds exist there too...!!!!!

True, I played a 5 hour 40 minute round at Barefoot Fazio 2 weeks ago.

The pace of play is slow, the courses (Moorland excepted) are average and you are a good distance from the best restaurants and night spots. Not worth it in my opinion.

Breakfast buffet and a 3 hour round....oh yeah and it's 60 degrees

Don't forget the free lunch and 2 free beers with each round

Legends is legit

I love the breakfast buffet there. The best part is when they've got the pizza oven going during lunch.

We did our annual 20 man MB trip last year at the Legends, and all the info posted above is accurate. Condos are middle of the road, clean yes but not fancy at all and the rounds will take a little longer than normal. Courses are all good mid level MB tracks, I prefer heritage as the best of the bunch. The wait staff and pro shop are super friendly and accommodating to requests. It is with out a doubt a cattle call at the free breakfast and you have to have patiences waiting to get to your cart at the start of the round from mid February- April. But, If you book this place and go in not expecting a country club and embrace the blue collar, paper napkin, coors light atmosphere that it is, it's a great time.

The one time I played Barefoot, I was a bit underwhelmed a bit - especially when price was factored in.

Are we still underwhelmed by Barefoot?
For the price, yes. There are a half-dozen courses I'd play up in the NC/SC border before I'd choose Barefoot.

It's simply my opinion that Legends offers outstanding value. I don't mind paying more for golf. My current golf trips are Bandon, because they are also outstanding value (at a higher price point). But the problem I had with Barefoot is that their prices were a pretty significant leap up from Legends and the quality didn't seem to be appreciably better. So, on subsequent trips, it never quite passed my "value filter".

Thanks to everyone for all of the feedback.

This trip started out being me and one buddy. We both had no real limit to the budget and I priced out a few higher end trips for Myrtle, Bandon, and Scotland. When we looked at what I had priced out we knew that we would eliminate most all of our buddies from the trip based on cost alone. We pushed Scotland to next year (15') and gave everyone 20 months notice to put together the cash. So we narrowed it to Myrtle. We looked at Barefoot and also finding our own accommodations and going a la carte with the course selection.

That's when we made the decision that this would still be a golfer's golf trip (36 a day) but the most important thing would be hanging with the boys for 5 days. With airfare from Buffalo and rental car we were able to get the cost in at just under $1,000 per man plus, dinner, beer, booze, and gambling $, which for some of us may double the cost of the trip :drinks: . I sent out the info the other day to 45 guys and within 24hrs we have 10 responses with 6 people joining us. Now I only hope that we don't get to many to make getting seats on the same flight an issue! Worse problems to have I suppose.

My only concerns with the Legends was the condition of the accommodations because a few sites ( MBGA.com specifically) listed the condition of the condos as a concern. I didn't want to ask leading questions but tried to ask so that if someone felt strongly about them they would comment but not to let someone nitpick it because they thought I wanted it.

So thanks again to everyone for your time and feedback.
