3 Wood Cracked, the search begins

Recommended Posts

So my 3 wood finally had to be put to rest. The trusty 2016 m2 is no more, and my search has begun. I am interested in the following:

Mizuno ST180

Cobra F7 3-4

2017 Taylormade M2 Tour

Ping G400 (either 14.5 or stretch)

I will be playing them in an x stiff flex. If any of you have hit any of the above I would love to hear your feedback.

Add a Tour Exotics CBX to that list - I tried all of your options and the CBX was standout for me

Will do, which was your favorite of the four above?

I liked the G400. But strangely I found it difficult to elevate off the fairway. The CBX is badged as low launch low spin yet I found that easy to elevate - go figure!

Cobra gets an honourable mention - I just wasn't in love with the feel

I have hit the cobra indoors and hit it very consistently. Also love the look of the black version.

I love the low profile of the G400 but i wish the sound/feel was more muted

I had a regular shaft and found it was going too high so changed it to a stiff which helped a little. Then again I hit all my clubs very high, even a 7 Iron comes down with snow on it.

I play the Cobra F7 driver and hybrid and I'm extremely pleased with both. I wasn't a big fan of the stock shaft but since Cobra has a variety of other shaft options when you custom order from their site, I was able to pick shafts that suited my swing from the list with no upcharge. I just ordered the King F8+ 3 wood and I'm anxiously waiting to receive it, but hitting the demo at the driving range has me very excited. I'm a huge fan of Cobra, fantastic underrated products and typically priced right, especially buying last years model.

I would have to agree. My experience with Cobra has always been somewhat surprising. Did you use the stock shaft in the F7 when you had it?

I can't help you, son.

You lost this senior at "extra stiff."

In the unlikely event that I'm still around when you get to R or A flex, we can talk!

I'm sure TaylorMade would replace it if it cracked...

I thought about that but I wanted to see what else was out there first

So get it replaced and sell it.

The newer golf clubs don't last too long, do they ?

I'd say they don't. To be fair, I used this club a ton. It was my driver replacement for a while so it definitely got put through its paces.

I briefly played the stock shaft in the F7 driver but ended up switching to an Aldila Rogue Black for a while and now I use the NV Blue. The stock shaft just felt too light for me but otherwise wasnt terrible. I never had the stock shaft in the Hybrid because I loved the Aldila Tour Blue in my 3 and 5 woods so I stuck with it when I ordered the hybrid.

Rogue or Rogue SZ are pretty amazing. SZ if you like a little flatter lie angle.

I agree!

These 3 woods are other worldly long!

First round out there was a 310 yard par 4 with a pond left of the green I thought was safest to lay up in so I hit 3 wood expecting to hit it 250-260 yards... ended up hitting it 285 yards and within chipping distance of the green!

15-20 yards longer than my epic 3 wood that’s for sure!

Can I suggest you try the Razr Fit Xtreme woods, i feel like this is the best wood callaway has made in a long time....I have 16* 4W and it hasn't left the bag since I put it in. I have a college friend who is an engineer at callaway who designed the XR, Epic, and Rogue lines and he gets irritated with me when I tell him that lol...although he did get me to go Rogue this year.

Callaway Rogue 10.5* (D & -1*) w/ GD Tour AD-DI 6 Stiff
Callaway RFX 16.5* w/ Fubuki Tour 63g Stiff
Callaway RFX 21* w/ Fubuki Tour 73g Stiff
TaylorMade MC TP 4-PW w/ Aerotech i125cw Reg
Callaway PM 54* & 58*
Odyssey #9 Stroke Lab - 33"
The one's I hit into the woods and into the water.

He is not Evan Gibbs lol, I wish...I'm sure my buddy's employee discount would have been bigger if that were the case.

I was fortunate to meet Mr Gibbs on the range at the ECPC at a conference. (I don’t work for Callaway)

We got to taking about COG placement in the head and the Cobra King LTD had just come out and I asked if they had anything planned that was similar?

He had a wry smile and said it not just yet, 12 months later XR16 Sub Zero came out.

Talking TrackMan Data with him was cool, we were watching some elite players hitting balls and I was calling out strike location based on the spin axis and face path relationship and he was impressed a club fitter would pick that sort of thing up. I just expect that to be good you should know it I guess.

Really cool guy! I’d love to catch up again and talk shop :)

I bet you would pick your buddies brain over all sorts of details! Oh to have access to that knowledge! Callaway’s R&D knowledge database is EXTENSIVE to say the least!

Yeah he called me up and we got talking about Rogue and before I knew it we were on the phone for over an hour and a half. He told me to go hit the rogue and the sz driver and get myself fitted and he'd see what he could do for me. Needless to say he hooked me up big time. He wanted to go down my entire back lol, I told him he isn't getting the RFX out of my bag lol...he is leaving the woods group and heading into the irons group very soon.
