Rogue X iron update

I purchased the Rogue X irons because I wanted to gain some distance over my current Apex CF 16's. I'm 70 years old and have difficulty getting to the green in regulation. I wasn't sure if the Rogue X would help in this regard or if I would just have be satisfied as a bogey golfer. I've only been playing golf for 3 years but I play 2 or 3 times a week and want to try and get to improve my game as much as possible.

After my initial round with the Rogue X, I felt that the dispersion was just too great and the distance just didn't seem to be that much more than the Apex. What I gained in distance was more than offset by being either right or left my target line. Mostly left of it.

I went back to the Apex CF 16's for a couple of rounds and then felt that I needed to play a few more rounds with the Rogue X to see if things improved. I played two more rounds with the Rogue X and now I'm starting to see significant yardage increases and the dispersion is becoming controllable.

I think it will take a few more rounds, but based on the results of my most recent 18 holes, I think these my be just what I need to get more GIR's. I'm seeing 20 more yards in distance with my long irons and 10-15 yards more with the short irons. I now feel the dispersion will improve as I get more comfortable with the differences between the Apex and Rogues.

One factor to consider: When switching iron models, it may take some time to retrain your eye. Let's compare the two iron models on offset:

    What's In The Bag *...

Driver: Calla XR16 Pro 10.5° (set open) / Fuji Evolution II TS Speeder 665 R-flex 63 gr.
    FWs: Tour Edge XRail 4W + 7W / GraphiteDesign G60 R-flex 60 gr.
    or Calla Alpha 815, set 16° + 20° / Fuji Motore Speeder 665 R-flex 62 gr.
    Hybrid: Cobra FlyZ 3H 19° + 4H 22° / Matrix VLCT Altus Lite flex 73 gr.
Irons: Tour Edge CB Pro Tungsten 4i - PW** / KBS Tour 90 R-flex 101 gr. (As of 21 Nov 2018)
    Wedge: Calla MD3 48°/8.SS + 54°/12.WS +
    MD.PM 60°/10  | KBS Tour R-flex 110 gr. |
    Putter: Slotline Inertial SL-583F / 34" w. SuperStroke 2.0 MidSlim grip
Bag: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag
    Ball: Calla SuperSoft
    * Either 7W or 3H left out, depending on course.
** Wedges: 46°and 48°are competing for bag space.

Thanks, I think that is exactly what's going on.

I would be surprised if you didn't hit them further. The Rogue X 7-iron, for example, is 27º and the CF16 7-iron is 31º.

My 7 iron in the Rogue X goes just about as far as the 5 iron in the Apex. Not sure it's JUST the jacked lofts or something else.

It doesn't really matter, as long as you are happy with your new clubs. :-)

I played at a country club sat and asked the pro if I could try the rogue x---had a hard time hitting flush compared to my wilsons !!

What Wilson clubs are you hitting?

I had no problem hitting them flush, just trouble with the offset. Seemed to make everything want to go left.

Jacked up lofts and slightly longer shafts will give you the distance increase. Once you dial them in you will love them. The Rogue X hybrids are also awesome.

My issue with them is if I nut a 4 iron it goes 215 plus but my average is 190ish. To me that’s a huge distance and they might become a dust collection for me , being a Lefty it’s hard to try before you buy. Smh

Finally got to the driving range to test out the Rogue X irons. I compared the results of hitting a 7 iron for a Rogue X, P790, and a Apex CF16. the results were not significant as far as I could tell. While the Rogue X and P790 traveled further than the Apex, it wasn't significant and really depended on how well the shot was struck.

As far as feel is concerned, the Apex felt a little softer.

Still going to test out a 7 ion in the Ping 500 which I ordered but have not received yet.

    its the swing--not the clubs

took the 5 and 6 iron with me today in place of the Apex 5 and 6 iron. Hit the 6i twice with good results. could not have made the shot with the Apex CF 16 so I'm going to play 9 holes with the Rogue X's tomorrow and see how they do.

Ya gotta keep playing them till you dial them in, I’m happy with them

With the strong lofts, what’s the top of bag look like? I’m looking at these and watch and reading reviews but sheesh, the lofts are crazyyyy......

If you build your set from the highest lofted gap wedge available, you end up with less jacked irons with Rogue X than you get with regular Rogue. For example, if I wanted a 5 iron set it would look like this: Rogue X - GW 51°, AW 46°, PW 41°, 9 iron 36°, 8 iron 31.5°. With the regular Rogue that 5 iron set would look like this: AW 49°, PW 44°, 9 iron 39°, 8 iron 34.5°, 7 iron 30°. As you can see the lofts on the Rogue X set are actually a bit higher than the Rogue lofts.
    Driver: Ping Anser 12°
    7 wood: Srixon Z 355 22°
    4 hybrid: Cleveland Classic 23°
    5 hybrid: Srixon Z355 26°
    6 hybrid: Cobra Fly-Z XL 28°
    Irons: Callaway X2Hot 7-A
Wedges: Cleveland RTX cavity 52° 58°
    Putter: Ping Ketsch Cadence Heavy

It takes a month or two of regular playing and range time to truly understand a new set of irons and their limits. Chopping and changing is going to slow the process down. The more often the old ones go back in the bag, the less your brain will focus on the new. Psychology is a big part.

Would anybody consider moving from XRs to the Rogue X an update performance wise?
