The Long, Slow Grind for Longer Drives

Been thinking about this since my last outing a couple days ago. Decided about 18 months ago to finally focus on being able to hit the driver, including more distance and fairways - of course. I was always marginal. But, in my last outing this week I noticed I'm hitting fairways consistently deeper than in the past. Took note of the measurements after my round and found I carried the driver 245-255 in the round. Glad to see this as I'm carrying bunkers at our club (we joined a year ago) that I used to land in, by 15 to 30 yards. But, man have I been working at this hard. When my focus on this first started I did go through a short stint of very long drives. Much longer than this. But, then that period ended and, for a while, I was back at my old shorter distances. That was disheartening. This improvement has been subtle but I can see it now...finally.

Would appreciate input from others here who have done this (decide to focus on this) and what your experience was like.

I went into this offseason looking to gain speed and distance. S.S. was usually 95 to 98 mph .. ball speed 142 -145 . Granted my swing was not in a great place at end of last season . Struggled with face control which caused a lot of stalling , and hanging on in attempt to stabilize the face . Got my swing speed up consistently 100-102 and top out at 104 -105 . Ball speed up 150 -152 ... can tickle 155 on occasion. Just better control of the face free'd me up to swing faster , with less tension. Carrying driver now 250-255 ..when I used to carry it 235-240

That sounds a lot like the folly I endure just before saying, "I'm thinking too much", opening a beer and swinging for the fences.

I’ve gotten longer as my swing and contact have improved. I have yet to focus on speed for speed’s sake, but I just started the Drive 400 program a week ago and hope that will help a little bit (although speed has never been my main focus and never will be).

Maybe get the super speed sticks? Surprisingly they do add yards. Just watch your consistency .

I have thought about seeing a driver specialist like Andrew Rice in Savannah to really get some driver pointers. And so I feel your pain.

Swing hard in case the ball gets in the way.
