Callaway Tour i(s) vs Tour i(z)

Pros/cons of each?
Hey guys, going to try one of these balls monday. I am a pretty big hitter, and hit most of my shots pretty high, so im guessing that I have a med-high spinning shot also. My question is, which ball would be better? I love hitting long balls, yet love to stop the ball on the greens too...

What are the differences of each ball? I know the z is longer, and the s is spinnier, but how much longer is the z, and how much more spin does the s have?

What would you game and why?

I am not a big hitter by any means, just 250+ but mostly in the middle. Furthermore I don't change balls or equipment easily. I've tested both of Callaway's premium balls extensively, among others. After concluding i(z) is the best ball for my high spin characteristics, I've stuck with that ball since.

I've said it before and will again, it's the longest ball for me, and possible the best ball I've ever played. How much longer that's hard to quantify. The i(s) spins way to much off driver and 3 wood, even irons as I really whack the ball imparting lots of spin; it cost me yardage, and it was too high (I hate high anything),

Played the i(s) today. Really liked it around the greens, putting and chipping. Didn't feel that it over spun off any club. I don't judge a ball off the driver so as long as I don't lose 30 yards I really don't notice it much. Feels a little clicky off the sticks but checks well. Really like it off the putter though.

I have played them both. I have also tested them both on the LM. The iZ is about 2-3 mph faster ball speed, which equates to about 5-10 yards. I actually spin the iZ a bunch on the green. There are two areas where I like the iS better, and that is off of the putter, and it is more durable. I can eat up an iZ fairly quickly if I am hitting a lot of full wedge shots. I am playing the iZ because I have shot better scores with it. I think it spins less off of the driver and for some reason, ever time I played with the iZ I shot better scores. It just flies better for me. I wish it felt as good and was as durable as the iS, but it isn't. Both are great balls. I have hit several full wedge shots on our soft greens that have backed up 25 feet with the iZ, so it is not lacking in the spin department. I seem to back the iZ up more than the iS myslef, even though the iS is softer.

I like the older ix ball for sure. It's a little shorter than the pentas I normally use, but it's very solid off the tee and around the greens. My gf bought me a dozen iz balls and I will try them out on saturday out on the course and will report back.

Can any of these balls be used for a swing speed under 95?

If you can compress the ball, you can play it and get the most out of it. I wouldn't really recommend a slower swinger trying higher compression balls such as penta, prov1x, srixon z-star x, or b330. I don't know if both the i(s) and i(z) balls high compression balls.

Anyone of any swing speed can use any ball! You might be leaving a few yards out there off the tee if your not able to fully compress a golf ball but what everyone needs to focus on is how the ball reacts into and around the green. Do you like how the ball putts, chips, checks and comes of the wedges and irons? If so give up the yards you are losing off the tee and score better with a better ball. For me a couple yards is not enough to worry about a golf ball. I hit the driver about 14 times a round but many more times with the other clubs. For me an extra 20 yards of distance is not enought of a trade off for the spin I could lose around the green. 50-60 yards of distance and no side spin and I might think about it but there is NO golfball that can offer that. I bought some Tour Balatas off ebay a few weeks ago and even after all these years they were not drastically shorter off the tee than the balls of today.

I have a question. Are people really hitting their drivers such a precise distance that they can say they are losing 5 yards or 10 yards with a certain ball? On any given day, in 1 round, I can hit my driver anywhere from 220 yards to over 300 yards. I realize that range is not normal for better golfers, but, is there really anyone who is so consistent that they can honestly say a ball is costing them 5 yards? i dont even think professionals are that consistent with their length.

Well bro, the guys like myself who know how many yards we lose from certain balls are saying so because we've gotten on the trackman and have analyzed the numbers. There would definately be variances out on the course from wind, lie, etc. wink.gif

I know some golfers with slower then recommended swing speeds that play multi-layer premium balls such as ProV's, ProV1X and Callaway i(z). I've seen it over and over; they lose all the balls distance benefits, and much of the balls stopping power. The only benefits are putting and chipping. They got nothing from the ball when using wedge ... couldn't compress it, so it didn't spin; just hit and bounced like other balls.

If the user doesn't have the ability to recognize pluses and minuses of ball behavior, playing a $4 premium ball in actuality will be no different then a economy ball. Aside from the cool factor playing a premium ball is a waste of money; course it's a choice. The two mid teen index people that took my suggestion to change balls now realize more distance and run out off driver, and far more ball action hitting into the green.

PS.. BigRed... In a word "yes". Good golfers pay attention to how far we "carry" the ball for cover purposes; in-turn that helps when testing a different ball. I played Callaway ix and TM TP Red. Each behaved differently, served different conditions, while providing similar distances. When I tested my first Callaway i(z) the distance difference astounded me. As I kept playing that ball it became evident it was longer compared to all the balls I've played. I switched and haven't looked back.

To take it one step further, in the TV booth yesterday Nicklaus reiterated his position on the balls influence; its going too far. He based that on how far Phil was hitting every club using Callaway's new ball during the skins game. I watched and can say Phil was bombing it so far down the fairway it was amazing.

Isn't Phil still using the Tour iX? He did use it at the Masters.

Yes he's using the older ix ball. He still apparently bombs it out there.
