Best irons for a beginner?

Hutch_85

Recommended Posts

I am new to the Golf world and I becoming more interested in the sport each time I play. I am currently in the market for a set of irons, but I am not quite sure which ones will suit me best. I did get sized recently and I was told, "+1/2 inch over Regular Flex". I would love to own a set of the Nike Coverts but I am looking to stay within the $300-$350 range. I have been looking/leaning towards the Taylor Made 2.0 Burner irons and I have heard great things about them, however I also heard that it is hard to work the ball with these particular clubs but how often will I actually be trying to "work" the ball as a beginner? I also heard that these clubs are great for a taller player. I am about 6' 3". Any opinions or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. God Bless! -Hutch_85-

The Burners are a great beginner club that will last you a couple years easy. You're a loooooong way away from "working" the ball.

Working the ball is not something that should really be of a concern at this juncture. I had a set of the Burner 2.0's. They are a very nice set of clubs. I know a couple of single digits that still have them in the bag, as well as mid and high handicappers.

You could look at TaylorMade Preowned and Callaway Preowned, if there are any Callaway products you are interested in.

Also, welcome to GolfWRX! :-)

Look into the nike machspeed irons. They are super forgiving on mishits and long and straight. You could pick up a set used for under $200

I did this a few weeks ago. I really like the look and feel of these clubs. And the lessons are finally kicking in and I'm getting more and more out of them. I'd recommend them.

I work at a golfsmith. look into the 2.0s.... callaway razr x new gens....nike VRS.

the vrs covert irons are actually 699, so out of your price range.

if you want to spend the money, (if you can); the two clubs I would HIGHLY recommend to you are the Mizuno JPX 825's and the Ping G25's. at 699 for both. so if you thought about coverts actually at 699, for that; you can get a way better club with mizuno and ping.

if you have any questions just let me know.

Pick up a used set of shovels if that's what suits you. I had better luck and have seen beginners do just as well without the oversized head and wide soles. Something like the Adams CB2/CB3 or Wilson CI9/CI11 have plenty of forgiveness.

lol, I'm just not a fan of SGI irons. I believe he would become a better player by learning with a more traditional yet forgiving CB. The Adams CB3's are really easy to hit and will last him a lot longer.

Search ebay for some Ping Karsten or Ping Eye model irons detailed with specifications .25" to .50 inch over length and green dot or white dot (upright) lie angles.
A nice condition SW through 5 iron set will cost you about $125. Once you receive the set have the clubs re gripped with Golf Pride Tour Wrap grips, which will cost you about $35 installed.
Also, buy off ebay a vintage Ping 35' or 36" putter, $35 to $45.
Forget about brand new clubs, forget about regular shafts, don't buy any metal woods. The best course of action for any beginning player is to spend a year on the driving range , practice putting green , learning and rehearsing good fundamental technique.
Hope this helps.

More opinion than suggestion:

As a beginner it would be good to ask yourself what you would like to achieve from the game. Just a jolly round from time to time? Get a very forgiving set. BUT you are on THIS website so if you plan on spending a little time at the driving range each week and getting a few lessons I think you would speed up the time between now and a respectable swing/game by going with a middle handicapper set of irons. Forgiving enough with decent feedback. Balance between enjoying the game when you play and getting useful feedback from shots (both good and bad) that you can learn from. The CB2's were mentioned above and I like that starting point. And learn to play them. The sensitivity of the head and ball flight produced are your best training aid.

If the set you like is a little out of your price range, buy used. If the grooves are good and there aren't any gouges that will affect playability then you can game them. They're essentially just hunks of metal. New is often just shinier. Once you really figure out your strengths and weaknesses, you can buy a new, more targeted set if you want.

You're a beginner and already on this site...I foresee tons of tinkering and BST in your future ;-)

Awesome information guys. I appreciate it very much! So do you think the 2.0 Burners are too forgiving to learn from?
Nothing will be too forgivable to learn from. Dont worry. Single handicappers use GI irons. They will be easier to learn from than blades. Dont worry

Having picked up the game a few months ago, I strongly urge picking up a used set of clubs and spending more on lessons. The money I paid for learning the fundamentals was worth it and now Im in the hunt for a new set of irons and wedges.

Driver - TaylorMade Sim2 Max 10.5*, HZRDUS Green 6.0 (60g)
3wood - Titleist TSi2 18*, HZRDUS Smoke Black RDX 6.0 (70g), MCA Tensei AV Raw Blue (65g)
4Hybrid - PXG 0317x Gen4, Fujikura Vista Pro (65g)
Irons (5-GW) - Honma XP1, NS Pro 950GH
Wedges - Cleveland 588 Forged  (54.12), CG15 (60.12)
Putter - Ping Redwood Anser

Find a used set of forged clubs and get some lessons. Also get fitted. The forged clubs will be easier to tweak for your fitter and you will probably like the feel better.

That way you get a really nice set of clubs that will last you a while and you don't have to buy new markup on items.

Adams has some really nice affordable forgings, esp used, and Mizuno makes the JPX 800 and 825 which would be found for a decent price.

Buy used and spend the extra money on lessons.
This is what I did (eventually). I started this year with a set of Wilson Staff Progressive Combos. I really did like them. Then I came across a set of Nike Machspeeds with only a few rounds on them for $175. So I sold my Wilsons and bought the Nikes. If I could do it all over, I would have taken lessons from the get go. It's much easier to start out on the right track, than try to break old habits and relearn everything.....

Go to your local golf shop and pick through the used irons and clubs. You should be able to hit them and get what feels right for you. In the end golf is a game that's played between your ears, so if you like the way the club looks you'll have a better chance of hitting it good more often.

Let's start with what you currently play...? Are there reasons technically, or are you playing some loaners or crapola that got you started?

Effectively all of the modern choices that have been mentioned are great sets. Can't go wrong unless they are fitted like pants that are too short. At 6-3, it is good to hear you are paying attention to length. However don't forget to get lie angle right too. You may find that the difference in prices change when you get clubs bent for lie angle, as some do the service free, and others require your shop to do it (and pay them).

As your first serious set, choose to go the used route, or spend the time to get new ones right. Don't waste effort on an off-the-rack that isn't customized to your height and swing. If a salesman pushes you towards standard-standard, run away!

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

I would not recommend going with anything SuperGI, a mid level GI iron should do you just fine. If you get something to GI, you just end with something that doesnt demand a better swing, and your progress of a better swing will come much slower.

Welcome to your new obsession :)
