Best irons for a beginner?

All this talk about irons has me looking all over. I found a mint set of Ping S57 5-pw for $205 and he's willing to throw in a Cobra Baffler 4h. They are green dot with stiff DG S300 with cushin inserts. I'd be all over these if I could sell my PI5s.

Cobra F8 10.5* UST Attas Coool 7S
Cobra F8 5-6 17* Evenflow Blue 75
Cobra F8 Hybrid 19* Smacwrap
Cobra King Utility 22.5* C-Taper Lite
Ping I210 5-UW PX LZ 6.0
Bridgestone XW-1 56* 60* DG Spinner
Odyssey Strokelab Seven S
Chrome Soft
Clicgear 3.5/Cobra King Ultradry

The Callaway X14s for $110 in the classified section would be a nice set for you.

I was in the same position as you, my buddy recommended a used set of R7 TPs. I snagged a set for $150 on ebay and so far so good. Consistently hitting the ball straight is my main concern (and still long from that), so I doubt any workability issues will come into play for quite some time. I was missing a gap wedge and snagged a burner 2.0 off fleabay as well, its also very forgiving and right now my most consistent club lol

My son is 6ft 2". He used Callaway X-16 for a while and recently tried some other sets. The one he really liked (having also tried Pings) was an older set of Mizuno MX100. These are pretty much the same as the JPX800 and 825s, just an earlier model. These are great irons. Get them cheap and spend a little bit of money taking them to a clubmaker to adapt them to your swing. Probably add 1/2" and check the lies. This is very important. With added 1/2" your swingweight should come out around D2 (does for my son), which will feel solid.

Cobra S3's are good GI clubs, less popular as well so you might get them nice and cheap.

I'm a high handicapper, 6'0" and I play Mizuno MX-200 - I had the lie adjusted up 1", but standard length. I find them easy to hit and they give me plenty of feedback when I mis-hit them. I've been playing around recently with trying to work them, nothing serious just really seeing if I could, and was able to get a nice little draw out of them. I think they are really classified as a more of a mid-handicap set, but they work for me and I'd expect them to last a good few years.

Awesome information guys. I appreciate it very much! So do you think the 2.0 Burners are too forgiving to learn from?

I really wouldn't use opinions from this site as a good barometer for choice of clubs for a beginner, most people here are either very good golfwrx or fanatical about equipment, or both.

When people talk about having blades to improve their swing that is their opinion not a fact, there is a reason SGI clubs and its not just people being lazy, and as a beginner you should use what ever is going to make the game more playable. The golf companies dont spend all this money researching what the average golfer needs not the average wrxer. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO FORGIVING TO LEARN FROM.

There are so many different brands, but I would stick with game improvements and work from there, because as most people mentioned, the only time you will be "working" the ball is trying to not loose them. Look at all of the different sites e.g. callawaypreowned, golfsmith, and golfwrx classfieds and pick whats right for you. But I do agree that lessons is the best thing you can do right off the back and get the fundamentals down and then you will work your way into better clubs as you progress.

Here is the real deal. Any set of current game improvement irons will work for you as a beginner. I have played Ping, Callaway, Mizuno and Taylor Made. They all make so-called Super Game Improvement irons. Go to a shop that will let you borrow some six irons (that seems to be the most common demo club of choice). Hit them all, whatever feels the best, buy for less than your budget. Use and abuse until you actually develop your own "SWING". Once you feel really good and comfortable with your "SWING", probably in about 2-3 years, get a swing analysis and by the time you do all that; you will have figured out that it is your short game holding you back. Get a better set of clubs and then read below.

Basically for any amateur with a double digit handicap here is how it works, hit you driver as far as you can and relatively close to the fairway. That will put the shortest iron in your hand. Your SWING should much better by now and you will either hit the green or hopefully be nearby. This is where most golfers lose the most strokes. THE SHORT GAME = 50 yards and in.

Why all the above? The advice is get good with your wedges. You will most likely buy a set that is 4-PW or 4-GW. Make sure you get a good sand wedge and maybe even a lob wedge (something you can full swing hit to 60 yards). I think you will have much more fun developing a short game than is you think. And, as long as your short game is tight, you will usually score well. And for good measure, I would start my golfing career using a 3 wood off of the tee.
Best of luck and welcome to the game
