Pettersen to Retire

Golf Dino

Well it will definitely be a storybook ending for Suzann Pettersen. She's enjoying married life and motherhood and now she has stated that she is retiring from the Solheim Cup and professional golf.

One of the biggest thorns in the US team's side during the biennial competition is retiring from the game as a competitor. The timing definitely makes sense for her. She was a controversial captain's pick this year after having taken so much time off for maternity leave, playing precious little in the way of competitive golf. But obviously, she played and practiced enough to be the difference maker in today's Solheim Cup finale.

She was never my favourite player as I found her a tad too rough around the edges -- especially in light of the "gimme-gate" controversy and her apparent lack of remorse and sportsmanship. But, she was a feisty competitor and regardless if she was liked or not, she commanded attention and respect like few others in the women's game.

I suppose some will suggest that Bronte Law will be a natural heir apparent, but we shall see.

In the meantime, Suzann goes out on her terms, holing the winning putt, after hitting one of the best shots under pressure, ever seen in the women's game to seal victory with the thinnest of margins. It was her raising a metaphorical middle finger to all of her critics and must have been extremely satisfying for her. She will be missed and her retirement leaves a big hole in European golf and indeed the Women's game.

She's always been one of my favorite pro golfers, and I guess it is some redemption of sorts but at the same time I'm not at all surprised she is going to retire and thought it would come sooner than this, frankly. So much potential, and clearly a terrific player, but I'll still think of her career as having a lot of unfinished business, so to speak.

The "apparent" lack of sportsmanship wasn't apparent at all and should have been a non-issue but for a social media crybaby generation that wants to rewrite match play rules every single time some dummy who should know the rules messes up.

Good luck to her!

Oh, you are definitely not the only one to suggest that. I've been hearing it all morning on the Solheim Cup radio broadcast -- from the European announcers. I suppose Bronte could fill that role. I think Ann Van Dam could evetually as well.

Yeah, Anne was pretty pumped up from day one. Maybe playing with Suzann got the juices flowing. Europe needs a Suzann to lead the way, Carlota is by far the best player as of now, but doesn't really show that fire.

Fascinating. I guess motherhood prevailed. I assume she's financially well off too. It could have gone the other way--her Solheim triumph could have fueled her return to the LPGA Tour. I did find her a slow player over the years, and tough to watch from that perspective. But much respect. She made history today.

A month from now, she likely will think she was effin' high to say that. Unless she is having ongoing injury problems, I can see her rethinking her "decision" and play again. IF, she really means it, it is too bad for the LPGA and their fans.

$14.8 million in career earnings on the LPGA with 15 wins and 121 top 10's in 17 seasons. 'Not too shabby. She ranks 4th in career earnings among active players behind Karrie, Cristie, and Inbee.

17 Seasons is the number that jumps out to me. Wow. That much travel. I'd be ready too.

I hear she picked up a part time job at Augusta, scaring off birds and other small animals.
