Not so. You made the statement "you cannot change your ball while playing a hole". That is incorrect. You can change your ball: a) when you take relief by dropping a ball under multiple rules (eg 15, 16, 17, 18 or 19); b) when placing a ball under the preferred lies local rule; or c) under a number of limited circumstances when replacing the ball. Your definition of " nitpicking" is clearly different to mine.

Interestingly, MLR E-2 Cleaning Ball (lift, clean and replace) requires that you replace the ball under 14.2, which means you must use the original ball (there are 4 exceptions though). MLR E-3 Preferred Lies, which you are inferring to allows the replacing of another ball. This could be because this MLR uses the term "free relief" which would normally mean a drop (and the use of another ball) but you are allowed to replace, probably because the spot must be precise to avoid another poor lie.

Well, written text is interesting. There is always the possibility that there are one or more individuals who understand that written text wrong, that is, in a different way that it was meant to be understood. However, in a conversation, as this thread is in a way, things said in the past have influence on the messages created in the presence. As it is in this case. The thread is about changing a ball during a round to create advantage. It is not about changing a ball when the Rules allow in various circumstances unrelated to the issue at hand. Thus, when I wrote 'you cannot change your ball while playing a hole' I am sure all of those who read the previous posts understood what I meant. I feel bad if you and Sawgrass did not, for your sake.
