Difference Between the Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro's & the Mizuno JPX 900 Forged ?

Hit-em

Recommended Posts

I was fitted for a set of Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal Pros this year , once I got them on the course I found that I had a tenacity to hit them fat

I figured I just needed to get use to them but my fat shots kept popping up through out the year

Now that the year is pretty much over I got to thinking that all of my prior irons had a thinner sole & thought perhaps the wider soles were contributing to my fat shots

Prior to the JPX 919 Pros I would occasionally have a fat shot but nothing to the degree that I was getting with them

I'm considering picking up a set of the JPX 900 Forged & was wondering if anyone knew what the sole width are like on these compared the JPX 919 Hot Metal Pros ?

I'm also considering the new Mizuno's MP-20 MMc's ..does anyone have a comparison between either the JPX 919 Hot Metal or the JPX 900 Forged to the MP-20 MMC's ?

Thanks

E6GN7ACFIF7W.pngI play older mizunos so I can't say with certainty but the forged 900's should be a little smaller, thinner than the hot metals. The hot metals are their biggest/most forgiving of the 3 models of 900 or 919. they "should" be the easiest to hit but sometimes bigger can be distracting.

It's really impossible to answer your question over the internet but just know the 900 forged will be a little smaller head, less forgiving but more feedback on where you miss. One very, very important thing to consider is the shaft. The shaft you use will play a huge part of your opinion of a set of irons, often times more so than the head. good luck in your search.

Not sure why the width of the sole would contribute to fat shots. Not questioning that you are experiencing them - just not sure that wide or thin soles would be a factor. Wider soles usually benefit a shot hit slightly fat as wider soles tend to have more effective bounce, which leads to less digging. Proper iron shots are ball first, then ground - so turf interaction is actually meaningless as the ball is long gone before the sole of the iron contacts the ground.

919 hot metals are big and ugly but great irons, and I have been playing AP2's and mp53 in the past, I never in a million years would have guessed that I would like these irons due to the "bulk" They feel so good and the distances are longer due to the loft but consistent. I played the Cally cf16 for two years which are great irons as well but in consistent on some shots. As far as hitting fat that is all in your swing, a good swing with any iron will produce.

I know nobody likes to hear this but it needs to be said. If you are hitting a lot of fat shots, the best area you can spend your money is in lessons, not clubs. That being said, if you still really want clubs, consider going to demo days at your local courses next spring (if possible/available).

That being said, I completely did the opposite recently where i was struggling with my hybrid and 3 wood, so I replaced both. Lessons probably would have been the better route. #hypocrite.

I've had similar experience as OP. When I've tried more 'game improvement' type irons, I've noticed an increase in fat shots. It's simply an empirical observation, and I can't be sure it's the soles (could be lighter shafts, for example). I'm a complete picker of the ball (no divot at all) and something about GI irons doesn't seem to jive with my swing. If I was OP, I'd also be looking at an iron switch. I understand the 'lessons' advice, but speaking for myself I simply don't take lessons, nor do I practice. Just no interest in lessons/practice/time on the range, just play 3-4 rounds per month and try to find equipment that works best with my swing errors.

I appreciate some of suggestions & opinions, I take lessons every year & have done so for the past 20 years

Not to say I don't make a bad swing once in awhile & have had days where no matter what I do I can't hit a decent shot to save my soul !!

As brew4eagle mentioned I'm a picker also, due to a number of wrist surgeries that prevents me from hitting down on the ball since I can't bow my left wrist

This past year I played a few rounds near the end of season with my old set & found I wasn't getting nearly as many fat shots as with my Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal Pros

The thing I really like about the JPX 919 Pro's is that they don't have much offset which is something I need in a iron plus the strong lofts make up for some of the distance I've lost over the years

The JPX 919 Pro's have the same shafts as my other set which are the Recoil 95 Reg shafts & are standard length ...the only difference I see are the soles which is wider then my old clubs ..that's why I was thinking the soles may be making a difference

Figured I'd keep them in my bag for the time being but will be looking very strongly at another set for next year ..perhaps I could pick up a set of the JPX 900 Forged cheap

One thought- is it possible that with the stronger lofts you might subconsciously or otherwise be adding loft at impact? The picker approach and further attempting to add loft has led to fats for me.

Were you fitted for the pros? I’m talking length, swing weight, etc? I’d think that the biggest contributor is something like different shaft weight, bend point, grip weight, overall club weight. I’d get those items measured and compare the two clubs you have. I bet the hmp are different than your old clubs. All those things and dramatically impact the consistency of strike.

I love how people just suggest to get lessons when you clearly said you didn’t have the issue before you switched clubs. It’s like they skim over the facts on purpose.

@wundej write, "I love how people just suggest to get lessons when you clearly said you didn’t have the issue before you switched clubs."
I would argue that switching clubs can definitely have an impact on one's swing. For one thing, your eye is still trained for set-up for the old irons. A while back I played test rounds with the TM SLDR irons that had more offset than my mainstay Callaway irons. I was missing left, and it turned out I was lining up with the clubhead about 2* closed. I had to retrain my eye to set up the SLDR clubface with what looked slightly open, but in reality was square.
A good instructor can check your swing and rule out swing set-up/motion as a problem. A lesson is a cheaper and more efficient first fix-it try than buying new irons right away.

I have to agree... I'm definitely someone who should be playing SGI/GI clubs, but I've tried it and if the iron head is too big, it just throws me off. Seems like the smaller the sweet spot the better my concentration. That doesn't mean I am making great contact all the time, but it does mean that I'm more confident hitting a club with a smaller head.
