2021 PGA Tour schedule changes for the Florida swing

In a way he does sort of have a point. If the top level guys don't show up to play the tournament loses steam and zing fast.

The guys that miss the cut don't get paid anyway do they? Unless they are getting an appearance fee. So whether or not their is a cut or not the money gets divided the same I assume.

If you did do more limited field events it would just create dud opposite fields events. It would just dilute the product I guess.

Maybe Rory has a problem with guys who never win, don't really care to compete to win and are happy to finish T20 most weeks, take home a decent check and hold onto their endorsement deals?

See, I have an issue with that last statement. After all, out of all the pros in the world, there are only a handful of winners each week anywhere. And to say they are happy and don't "care to compete..." is a big assumption. What does that even mean?

Secondly, Deane Beman was right. People want to see the Nicklaus' and Palmers...nowadays Woods' and McIlroys, etc. Well, those guys need people to play against. And despite what everyone seems to think, you will not see a system where the top 70 players are teeing up against each other every week. So if you cut out these guys that you deride, then what? And you know who is in the top 70? A lot of those guys who finish T20.

Adam Scott also mentions that the WGCs aren't as special as they used to be. For Adam Scott, the WGCs aren't quite as important as they once were

From the end of February to the end of August in a six month span, you've got

4 majors

TPC

3 WGCs

3 FedEX Cup Playoffs

3 invitationals (LA, Bay Hill/ Memorial)

So you're playing 14 out of 26 weeks to hit all of them. The question is can the PGA Tour design a schedule that spaces them out so all the top players show up?

It's not derision, it is a supposition. I think it is a factual statement to say there is a population of folks on the PGA Tour (and perhaps the Korn Ferry as well) that unless the stars magically align or they play in a weaker field event don't stand much of a chance at winning. That isn't a knock that is just how it appears to be. They even came up with a term for those guys, "Journey Men."

I am not saying that they accept mediocrity just that they realize that they are maximizing what talent they have and are happy with the living that they are making. It is comfortable is all.

If you have ever been to an event and watched how guys that are out of it play and their body language I think you would agree there comes a point in the round where the guys stop competing (I'll qualify that) as hard.

Why are they always changing things up?

If I had my way I'd scrap that Fed Ex Cup. It's a load of crap if you ask me. The playoff format does not work in golf. I don;t really care if Brooks Koepka, a multimillioanire wins another 20 million for winning a couple of moneybag corporate events with no history that mean nothing in the context of being a great player.

This 'wraparound season' is a nonsense too. The PGA in May is another disaster.

Go back to the schedule they had in 2000 or so. Stop the tinkering.
