No one is arguing the feel isn't different - it would be different if he switched to Titleist MBs. What I'm saying is that the CG of the Vapor Pro is meant to be in the center of the face, not toe-biased like you're saying. They have more metal toward the toe because in traditional blades, the metal of the hosel causes the CG to be heel-biased.

 

A compelling explanation as to why Rory hasn't switched, and is unlikely to do so. Nike, for the moment, has stopped making muscle-backs. Perhaps they'll rethink it.

 

The Vapor Pro is a muscle-back... The shape of the muscle just isn't as traditional as we are used to seeing.

 

In the MM Proto irons, that the Vapor Pro is modeled after, the "MM" actually stands for "Modern Muscle."

 

"MM" is a marketing slogan. Moving metal away from the center of the club to the toe to create a cavity then slathering on an electric lime green/yellow swoosh doesn't make it a muscle-back. Rory sure knows the difference between sloganeering and actual club feel/performance. He's staying with the muscle-back design that's won all of his majors.

 

Nike first and foremost is a shoe company.

 

Yes, Rory is sticking with the muscle back design that he prefers, instead of making the move to the new muscle back design of the Vapor Pro. The muscle design of his VR Pros have a CG that is closer to the heel, which he is accustomed to. The Vapor Pro has a muscle design that moves the CG to the center of the face, which he is not used to. Nobody here is saying that the VR Pros aren't better for Rory's game.

 

However, have you held a Vapor Pro iron in your hands?

 

I have... There is no cavity in that iron.

 

If you define the Vapor Pro is a cavity back iron, then you would also consider the MP-32 a cavity back iron (moving metal away from the center of the club, right?). However, the MP-32 is a muscle back iron that still has a cult following as one of the best blades that Mizuno has ever made.

One missing a muscle. The place right behind the center of the face. That's the one Rory noticed too.

I play two MBs that are highly revered here on WRX, and also found in various Tour player's bags around the World. Mizuno MP-69, Callaway Razr X MB.

Although injured and not able to give my full swing level, I though the feel of these Nike Vapor Pro MBs to be quite beefy. Sure, looking at the back they are somewhat funky. But, there's still a constant mass of steel front to back, and where you want it to be in reality - under the center axis of the ball at contact for a solid launching strike.

The VPs just have the [i]opposite[/i] design in [u]lines[/u] of steel mass when you follow it out to the toe. They are running [b]up[/b] from the sole, where as most other MBs out run down or stay parallel (Titleist 714 mb). All the MBs out are sculpted or shaped to some degree with more mass low on the sole, less higher near the top edge of the blade back. Nike VPs have a very unique modification of this same design, which is only to give some game improvement quality in putting more mass via shape where the others never have tried.

But alas, wait for the Cobra Fly-Z Pros. (See MGS Forums - "now with less clunk") They will not be changing their mass distribution with shape, they will be inserting a plug of tungsten in the toe - oh the blasphemy!
