Call me old fashioned but I wear a hat for function - to keep the sun out of my eyes. Wearing it backwards may be stylish for the young golfers but since I'm in my 60's I'd feel out of place. Like wearing my pants with my butt hanging out. Maybe OK for some but not for me.
In the 60's or 70's did you wear big bell-bottom jeans with the bottom of the legs getting all frayed from your heal stepping on them?

I know I did and the "old folks" didn't like that too much...
You're right there. One summer I grew long hair and a beard and everybody 50 and older gave me looks. Everybody under 21 asked me for drugs.

LOL. This thread is funny because golfers wear some of the gayest sh!t I've ever seen. Talk about a lack of masculinity. I only wear a backwards hat to the gym, never to the course. However, a backwards hat is the least of our problems when in comes to the stereotypical golfer attire. Here we go:
Plaid....GAY
Cargo Shorts.....GAY
Pink and Light Purple colors.....GAY
Neon Colors.....GAY
Payne Stewart-esque attire....GAY
Visors......GAY

And thats just a start. With more time I think I can come up with more

wow, i was thinking about joining a country club, but i dont think i can handle it if the members are anything like 75% of the people posting on this threat. I didnt know that a backwards hat caused physical and emotional harm to you people.

The more I read threads like this and cargo shorts, etc. the more it seems as though some golfers think they're way is the right way and everyone should conform otherwise they're sloppy and lack etiquette. Maybe everyone should just wear uniforms so we all look the same.

agreed, maybe the tan prison scrubs would make everyone happier?

I'm a high school golf coach in Michigan and backward hats aren't allowed to be played with. Very nice rule.
why is it a nice rule? because thats the way you happen to like things done? Golf is a game, kids are supposed to have fun, let them wear what they want.

The only acceptable time to have your hat on backwards on the golf course is in extremely windy conditions or in the rain to prevent water from dipping off of the bill of your cap ala Jim Furyk. Otherwise you are being judged by everyone else as a clown. Just the facts.

i honestly couldnt care less what people think of me when im playing. Whats silly to me is the whole "greater than thou" paradigm that many golfers exhibit. Like i said, golf is a game, we arent at a funeral. Dont spend your time judging people, try to have some fun in your life.

I guess I've always felt that the only time I care about being judged is if I'm on trial. Otherwise, judge away, I don't care. (All this and I don't even wear my hat backwards)

Your clothing now defines ones masculinity/sexuality?

Talk about insecurity.

I could absolutely care less what anyone else does or wears as long as it doesn't directly impact me, my game or anyone else around me.

I don't know which side of debate you're on because this is the only page I've read, but those "outfits" make me laugh a bit when someone tries to pull them off in real life . . . and everyone else in the group is wearing black, navy blue, grey, and earth tones. And, since when did everyone start referring to "caps" as "hats".
A cap is a cap and a hat is a hat.

I'm on the side where I don't give a rat's a** what someone else wears. Also, on the side where I realize what is "acceptible" or not is 100% abritrary. Below someone mentions taking hats off indoors. In other cultures it is not acceptible to have your head uncovered. So there ya go - it is 100% arbitrary and not worth worrying about if it does not affect you (except in your own head).

i think that there is a huge difference between choice of attire and being verbally disrespectful to the coach....or not showing up for a team event. Making a rule to show up on time and be respectful is one thing. Making a kim jong un rule that kids have to dress the way you want is silly.

This thread is still amazing.
It's not silly. It's called a dress code and it's how society works. If you don't think so, try showing up to the Fortune 100 company where I work in clothes that don't meet the dress code, and see how that goes for you.

You guys who say you don't care what anyone thinks about you, at least understand that it's normal and natural for everyone around you to judge you at all times. That's how we evolved to survive on this planet. Is this person trustworthy? Is this person reliable? It this person sharp, intelligent, etc.? We're constantly evaluating. You're all evaluating too. I love the replies that say nobody should judge by clothing because you've looked at other golf clothing and already judged it, too. That's solid thinking, there. "All your traditional golf clothing is gay so you can't judge mine." How does that make it out of someone's thoughts onto a computer without them realizing how contradictory it is? Perfect.
