#17 Club West Phoenix, AZ. 2 greens, probably more than a 100 ft drop AND tee shot can range from 215 to 64 yds. Add a little wind then surround the hole with mountain abyss... What do ya get? A nightmare. The 50 yard difference between the center of the two greens is very problematic. For example the tips are either 215 or 165, then depending on where they set the tees set the tees and the pin placement we are talking major calculations here. For a guy who is hoping his socks are both the same color in the morning, this hole is really hard to get a bead on. Half the time this is just one of those holes where you have to say, "eff it, it looks like a 6i today so let's try it." I really need to get a picture of it for you to appreciate the madness.

I have participated in many foursomes that have failed to put a ball on either green. As went Rick James and Charlie Murphy, to the abyss, so have many a foursome on this hole. Just invites shanks up the mountain. Also, I have never seen a foursome where someone did not end up putting one on the side of the mountain.

The 16th at Carnoustie. Played into a 30 mph wind

245 Yards – Par 3 – Stroke Index 13

A 245 yard par 3 often played into the wind. Tom Watson had 5 attempts to get a par 3 here during the 1975 Open Championship and was not successful in doing so. In 1968 Jack Nicklaus was the only player to get past the pin during the final round. This hole is really a 3.5 and a par is an outstanding achievement.

Caddie’s Tip

“Hit plenty of club on this lengthy par three. Just like number eight the majority of the trouble is at the front of the green.”

hole16sslarge.jpg

<img style="width: 0px; height: 300px; border: 0px" />

At the opposite end of the spectrum... played into 40 mph gusts.. The Postage Stamp at Troon.

Hole Overview

Originally called "Ailsa" because there is a perfect view of the rocky islet of that name, from the tee. The smallness of the putting surface accounted for the current name when Willie Park writing in "Golf Illustrated" said, " A pitching surface skimmed down to the size of a Postage Stamp".

Much has been written about the famous eighth hole at Royal Troon, aptly named the "Postage Stamp". The tee is on high ground and a dropping shot is played over a gully to a long but extremely narrow green set into the side of a large sandhill. Two bunkers protect the left side of the green while a large crater bunker shields the approach. Any mistake on the right will find one of the two deep bunkers with near vertical faces. There is no safe way to play this hole, the ball must find the green with the tee-shot. Many top players have come to grief at this the shortest hole in Open Championship golf.

Pennisula State Park in Door County Wis. Straight off a cliff, blind shot. 120 feet down and every green hit - plugs. If you go 15 yards too deep, you will hit the road and are OB.

#17 of the Highlands at Mississippi National in Red Wing, MN. 150 - 170 yards, depending on which tees you play, but 150+ feet of drop from the tee box to the green. Club selection is always a bit of a guess, but throw in a 20+ mph gusting crosswind, and it's anyone's guess, with the ball hanging in the air that long.

Penn State Golf Courses #14 on the White Course.

3 Bunkers short, one is a pot bunker, 2 are deep and frame the green. Even though they are all 30-40 yards short it makes the tee view intimidating. Add in another greenside bunker, 10 tee box 15 yards left of the green, and tall fescue surrounding the green, a tee box pointed at houses on the right, and finnally a running path 20 yards right of the green. Oh and where I play from the hole plays 190. To top it off the gree has a false front, middle slants Left to Right, the vally behind goes Right to Left, and the back goes Back to Front. 21 paces deep and 34 paces deep.

The 1st/10th at Bridge of Allan GC. A casual 220 yard starting hole. It also happens to be just under 100 feet uphill. In addition to this there is a 6' high dry stone wall 35 yards short of the green. The green itself is benched into the hill and is raised 4' above the ground at the front. If you choose to be safe and go past the pin with a approach shot/chip you will face one of the quickest putts you have seen in your life. If it happens to also be off to the side of the hole location 25' of break on the putt is not uncommon.

I was always happy to get out of there in a combined 9 or less.

Alternatively you can try to hit this green at Anstruther from 245 yards in a stiff sea breeze. Many people consider this the hardest par 3 on these islands.

that looks a lot like old #5 now 16 ar redtail mtn in the tn.

the nuttiest i've seen/played has got to be at evergreen (muni outside denver). short but totally blind, slightly uphill, and facing a giant boulder. there is a spray-painted X on the rock to aim at

This has just reminded me of the 5th at Painswick. 114 yards of a blind assault on an iron age hill fort. After the hole you will have completed a vertical climb of some 270' from the clubhouse.

from the courses i've played so far, the 15th at harborside is one of the craziest due to the sand and one of the toughest due to the wind and there is so much sand the pictures do it no justice. the tee boxes are elevated a touch and once there was so much wind coming back toward the tee box everyone had to hit driver

The 11th hole at Crystal Springs is pretty crazy. Dogbone shaped green that can make the hole play very differently as its basically turns it into 2 different greens depending on pin placement. You're teeing off over a quarry about 100 feet above the putting surface making club selection interesting.

Wow that's beautiful. We don't get elevation like that here in texas :(
