Here's my list of favorites so far this summer in my area taking into account conditions and price. Give them a shot...

1. Newport National - Middletown, RI ($55 email specials for 18 and cart can't be beat - supreme condition)

2. Meadow Brook - Richmond, RI (close 2nd to Newport. great conditions and $50 early bird specials)

3. Richmond CC - Richmond, RI (In great shape and fun to play. Cheap afternoons to get out before leagues)

4. Fenner Hill GC - Hope Valley, RI (Another challenging course in great shape. Lots of specials weekdays)

5. Fox Hopyard - East Haddam, CT (Great course but can only play in early spring cause now it's expensive)

6. Beaver River GC - West Kingston, RI (My hidden gem. Not many long holes but really fun to play.)

7. Elmridge GC - Pawcatuck, CT (Prices aren't great for course, but with 27 holes, there's always an open 9)

Absolute Worst/Stay Away!...

1. Winnapaug GC - Westerly, RI (Horrid conditions for $55 round. Ownership should have course taken away!)

1. Misquamicut (I played in the RIGA Burke tourney to get here and Shelter Harbor - Spectacular - find a way to play here, reeks of old $$$)
2. Shelter Harbor (Excellent - great clubhouse/locker rooms - layout is challenging - lots of forced carries - fairways generous - greens fast and undulating)
3. Fenner Hill (Challenging course, hazards, OB, Greens, Layout, Sidehill Lies) -- condition was pretty good, only wish I could break 80 here...

I haven't had much variety this year, but I'll go with the standards:

Lake of Isles North: Expensive, but I took advantage of the BOGO offer they had during the week July 4th fell on. Heading back to play the second round on the 18th. Always good conditions and a great post round lunch. I think I was +3 on the front, but the back nine handed my my lunch, as some smart designer placed sand traps right in the areas where my tee balls fell.

Meadowbrook: Just an excellent value

Fenner Hill: I hadn't played there in years, but thoroughly enjoyed the round.

CT National is one of those courses that's going to be a front-runner for the Fall Fling... that and Blackstone National. They're both centrally located and easy to get to. Meadowbrook is just too far south (and I live here!). :)

I always enjoy Fenner Hill, especially the 15th hole, the reachable downhill par 4 over the pond... a true risk/reward hole. I play it Monday as one of the RIGA invitational courses. :)

I love all the great reviews ct national has been getting over the past two years. Very well deserved for the renovation that was done a few years back. I hear a lot from golfers that had never played there before, GPS took them crazy ways of getting to the course. I live ten mins from the course so I offer them to follow me a more direct way to main roads. It's slowly loosing that "hidden gem" moto in my mind but I couldn't be any happier for them.

Newport National. Period. I am not surprised to see it at the top of the OPs list.

Someone else mentioned Shelter Harbor. Amazing place. If you have the opportunity to get on do not pass it up.

And Winnapaug... everytime I drive by it I can't understand why it's so crowded it. It just looks awful.

The post was about courses played so far this year. I've enjoyed playing Newport National a few times, but it's not in my backyard. I'd like to get out there before the season is over, but timing is everything.

CT National is a beauty. I played there on Tuesday, course was in excellent shape. Palyed at 2:00pm, was done by 5:45pm

Great layout there. Surprised is not listed on the top 5 public courses in CT that Golf Mag, Golf digest and golfweek do for ranking in each state. To me, it is the best public course in CT.

Oh I am sorry, did you violate a rule or something? I get what the post is about and agree with Newport National.
