No new acquistions...?

Recommended Posts

Grabbed this just this week. Means I now have a full 1-LW set of Eye 2s. The 1 and 2 are straight Eye 2s while the rest are Eye 2+ and as you can see the orange dot on the 2 has been painted black (the rest of the set is black dot) but who's counting?

So this isn't a club acquisition but a vintage / classic style. I have been looking at getting some plus fours. I pulled the trigger and got a set. I wore them during our match on Saturday.

Yeah they are quite nice, thanks!

Sitting with 8 sets of hogans now, 9 of which are crazy good condition. (88 Redlines, 93 FT Forged, 63 IPT, 73 Apex, Slazenger / Hogan Precision stainless steel and of course 99 Apex). My other sets Apex II, 71 Power Thrust, Apex PC and nice too, just not amazing condition.

I don't have any Hogan irons and from everything I have read, Mr. Hogan manufactured,"very good golf clubs". I do have a set Men's R/H MacGregor Ben Hogan,"Par Maker #1622" irons. I also have a 3 club set of 1959 Ben Hogan "Long John" persimmon woods. Canadian Crippler...you have some very nice Hogan irons that will never lose their value.

Hogan Apex Blades(HAB) - My set of 1949 "General Line" MacGregor Ben Hogan "Par Maker" irons has had some work done on a 5 iron as well. I'm pretty sure the shaft has been pulled and replaced. The ferrule is short by 3/8ths of an inch and has no coloured trim rings as well.

Did you know that under the leather wraps is bitumen crepe paper wrapped around the shaft and under the bitumen crepe paper is pitch that has been heated up and applied to the shaft. The pitch is applied to hold the bitumen crepe paper to the shaft. The bitumen crepe paper is applied to the shaft so when the leather wrap is put on the shaft it give's the golfer the desired grip size.Tad Moore helped me(sent me) a long replacement piece that was the right stuff but it was too wide and not enough. They still make the bitumen crepe paper rolls BUT to get it, I must order the rolls from India and purchase a minimum order of $1000.00 worth. Then I have to pay set up an account in India which was $250.00 and then there's Indian Customs, Duty's and taxes to pay and then there was a shipping and handling fee's and then there was the actual order to pay. Too many hoop's for bitumen crepe paper rolls. I did make contact with a electrical engineer in Montreal who asked me to send him a piece of the bitumen crepe paper. He played Hogan irons and was keen to help me...that was spring time.

Attached is a few picture's of my irons and a couple of some woods. Notice anything,"out of place" on the 4 club set of 1949 Par Master woods? The white paper face insert denotes Par Master(Jim Kaplan) and the model number is 1552 which denotes Par Master as well but the name on the sole plate reads," Par Maker". Also, on the 1948? cross-hatch face Par Master take a look at the hosels just below the whipping covers. If my memory serves me right, at least one hosel was cracked,"all the way around". I did repair the crack BUT I did not do a very good job of matching colours or blending in(sanding) the repair.

Just got these! I surmised they were Wood Bros from the blurry Craigslist image taken from a far distance. The ad only said 'Golf Irons'. The shorter irons have seen some action for sure. Research says they are forged SS but there was a little surface rust. I did not think SS rusted. Any suggestions on where or how to refinish? Some bottom grooves might need some work also.

Congratulations! These are very rare and desirable, hand forged and ground by a Japanese sword maker for Wood Bros.

The design is from a compilation of ideas given to Dave Wood in the locker room at a PGA event, during a rain delay. Dave had asked a bunch of players what the ideal iron design would be - this is what he got. I think a bunch of Texas players - Crenshaw and Kite included + Jeff Sluman suggested features they liked in a playable iron..

They are SS, but it will rust slightly over time.

A little gun oil and steel wool will clean them up - or just go hit 'em some.

This model actually won the PGA Qualifying School one year, but were quite rare, and Wood Bros couldn't afford to pay players to use their equipment.

Note my avatar, which is an one-of-a-kind prototype A wedge for your set.

There is currently for sale at a very low bid level, a partial set of the nearly as rare, cast version of this iron on eBay.

Texsport. Thanks. I learned about these from an earlier post by you. These are 3-9 plus the sand wedge. No pitching wedge. They have X100 shafts and are a tad longer than standard. I will try the steel wool suggestion.

Funny story. I ran across a sand wedge like this several years ago. Did not know much about Wood Bros at the time. Took it to the practice bunker, hit one shot, holed it, then walked away. Like an idiot I sold it later.

The sand wedges often have narrow soles, like the irons, but I used one for years, and loved it.

It's in one of my WB bags these days.

The A wedge has a wider sole, and interesting minimal toe grind. I always thought that Ben Crenshaw had a hand in the A wedge design, because Dave told me that Ben liked the old Wilson DynaPower Sand Wedges, and preferred to hit green side pitches off the toe, with the heel off the ground ala Phil Rodgers, Cory Pavin, and Paul Azinger. My A wedge has a generous sole and narrow toe, which seems to fit Ben's ideas.

I have a new $12 acquisition that goes all the way down to '1' .

It's analagous to a band with zero style or taste for sure ... I can't wait to hit it :)

How on earth did Pavin ever win a US Open with a set of these. I mean ... it's not as if you can play something like this, but it's actually just a bit of branding covering up your Mizuno forged blank or something like that is it ?

No other golf company on the planet would have been making garbage like these at the time apart from Rossignol Cleveland. Pavin definitely WAS playing the Cleveland VAS lol :)

I'm pretty sure that Pavin didn't play these until after he won the U S Open!

In fact, he signed a big endorsement deal for these and promptly went into a near career ending nose dive.

Texs,, I think he won the Open with those.. Not 100 pecent sure, but will have to check them out.

BJ, what are you going to do with those? Don't tell me your gonna go hit them. LOL.

Just checked he had a Cleveland hat on with VAS on the side. He won with those. Hard to believe.
His 4 wood on 18 Sunday was one of the best pressure shots of all time. If the green didn't break so hard, that ball was tracking in the hole !

I think Pavin was the only guy who had the balls to play something like those, he hit it that good.. Knowing Pavin he probably fell in love with them straight away.

Damn! Cory was even better than I thought! Also didn't remember that VAS were Cleveland irons - I thought Cleveland but didn't have the VAS connection.

I know he didn't win much after the Open - once or twice, and the VAS irons were blamed by golf fans for the fall off.
