Yeah, I walk Northwest Park. I think it's pretty walkable, except maybe the big hill going up #17 (what used to be #8).

 

Speaking of walking, who all is walking Blue Mash? Also very walkable, except getting to #1 tee box is a bit tedious.

Saw the Doobie Brothers at the Fredneck fair last night. Awesome show. Those guys still sound great!

 

OLD MAN RANT - Great music! Beautiful melodies and harmonies. Many times they were all singing together. Strong instrumentals, guitar work, sax, keyboards, solos. Very tight Real music! None of the lip syncing, electro pop, whatever the F a DJ Khalid is type BS that is popular now. Can't wait to see them again!

Northwest is a pretty easy walk. Blue Mash is also a pretty easy walk. As DC said, the only real headache is getting from 9 to 10. Other than that it's short transfers from green to tee on each 9, and pretty flat.

So I've never played Blue Mash any tips for a first time player?

 

hole 1: there's a bunker which looks like it's right in the middle of the fairway. i aim at it, and my ball will either be left, right, short or over it (tells you a little about how well i aim). green is large and has 2 distinct tiers, and can be blind/semi blind on your approach. get a good number. missing left will tend to kick balls towards the green. front right bunker is typically death. best miss is typically pin high, right, or in the hollow left of the green.

 

hole 2: bunkers guard the left and right of the fairway, which narrows past the bunkers. green has a narrow opening left that feeds on, and a bunker short right. best miss on the approach is short left.

 

hole 3: take #sullyisapgapro's advice and play it like a par 5. huge green is elevated and typically plays into the wind, adjust accordingly. miss is right, avoid the domesbellybutton-esque bunker left.

 

hole 4: downhill par 3 that usually just plays the distance. a bit of a respite after the opening stretch, but not an easy hole by any means. wind typically off the left and sometimes hurting. miss is just right of the green or straight and short. avoid the long stuff right.

 

hole 5: 1st gettable hole. par 5. miss off the tee shot is right (hole 3 runs parallel). tricky layup, make sure you stay short or get past the end of the fairway bunker that cuts across. blind approach, slightly uphill. over the green is no bargain, so hopefully you have a good number to the stick.

 

hole 6: well framed par 3. misses long and misses right will kick away severely. green has funny pin locations, get a good read on it.

 

hole 7: blue and gold tees are waaay back there which make for a fun tee shot. a bit easier from the whites. get in the fairway, then you just have to hit a good tee shot. narrow as F green, and it looks even worse than it is. missing left and right is no bargain, with the right being slightly worse than left. again, gotta hit a good approach. avoid the bunker right. best miss is probably short and in the throat.

 

hole 8: seems like a go-for-it situation... that i never go for. layup to 100-115, hit an approach on and give your birdie putt a chance. walk off smiling if you make a par. easy hole that never plays easy (for me).

 

hole 9: miss off the tee is right. water down the whole length of the hole left. fairway is wide, but pinches in a certain points, with a series of FW bunkers right. good design. play it like a par 5, and you should make a par.

blue mash (con't):

 

hole 10: make sure you can't reach the pond, otherwise flail away. miss on tee shot is right, but rough is no bargain. miss on approach is left, but if you get past the cart path left, hit a provisional. back tier pin, add a club. fun hole.

 

hole 11: hold on for dear life. wet right. wet short right. yuuuuge bunker left. wind often into and from the left, so it wants to push your ball into the wetness. tough hole. bogey not really a bad score here. par is like gaining .75 on the field. drop area available if necessary (follow cart path).

 

hole 12: on the tee shot, don't miss left, don't miss right. i try to hit a cut at the bunker cluster on the left. can be a go-for-it situation, but err left on your approach - the water sneakily comes into play short right. big green, grades front to back overall.

 

hole 13: good looking par 3, second of 3 par 3s on the back. green slopes right to left. don't be short, plays the same wind as on 11 (typically hurting from the left).

 

hole 14: looks narrow as F, but opens up a bit on the right. i try to hit a cut at the bunkers left, but if you miss left, there's room there (tee box of the next hole, so yell FORE). funny green, i tend to over read putts here. overall back to front. miss is just short/just left on approach.

 

hole 15: kinda looks like you're staring at nothing on this tee box. going over the mounds right doesn't really help, and there's a set of hidden bunkers past, so just play left of them. 150 pole is a good target. green is longish, get a good number. pinches in the middle (where there is a slope) and runs to the back left corner.

 

hole 16: play it like a par 5. big fairway right of the bunker that can be hard to see depending on tee box. typically a longish 2nd shot. open throat to run it up. tough hole for me.

 

hole 17: add 1.5 clubs and don't miss right. drop area available (follow cart path).

 

hole 18: can basically hit it anywhere off the tee, tho long and straight is preferred. look for the #eagleplaque down the left side, about 255 yards out from the '14 capitol cup. if you can't hit it 255 uphill into the wind to set up a 2 putt birdie, layup to 100. big green, semi-blind, don't be short.

 

have fun! it's a good course that challenges and rewards a thoughtful golfer. one of my favorites in the area for sure.
