13 year old verbals for D1 program

I'm amazed as a coach the effect some parents have on their kids. I had my one junior golfer ask me to tell his dad the wrong hole so his Dad would have trouble finding him on the course when he got there.

 

Guess I better thank my Dad for one less issue.

Initially I laughed at this because it hit close to home because as an 8th grader(football), I told my father the field which was a decent ways from our actual practice field(we had a scrimmage and were playing at the HS practice field as it was an actual football field versus ours was the outfield of a baseball field, lol)

 

It really is kinda sad that a kid has to do that-

 

My father of course blamed me, lol

I think people need to let their kids have a childhood and not be so concerned with these things. One day at a time. It's nice to plan for your child's future, but 5 years out with a commitment like this is a bit much. If he's that good, he should play the game for the enjoyment of it at that age and see if he still is that motivated when the time comes.

I wish these things were binding at the age they are agreed on. It's crazy to think that this kid is still going to be this good compared to his peers in 5 years. Just from playing high school golf, one year one of the freshmen was consistently shooting even, by senior year same kid wasn't even playing golf.

That's part of the thing...the kid can "commit" but nothing is signed by either party until the junior year of high school. There are two signing periods for each sport of varying dates in the fall and spring.

And actually the early signing period for golf is Nov of a players senior year of hs.. late signing is spring. AJGA does a big Ping signing day during that early signing period so people can see where players are signing to.

My son has played against Pagdin since they were 8 and 9. He's always been a very good player, and I think he'll be a very good college player. His dad, who is from the UK, is VERY intense, much more so than the average junior golf father. Not saying that's good or bad, but to each his own.
