Macgregor golf

I used to be a photographer and went to shoot at Macgregor just before they went under. I just received a group of the old sticks and wonder if anyone is interested in them. I will st some pictures if anyone is interested in seeing them.

[/quote]I am definitely interested in them as I collect the older blades though I Played Staffs during both of their hey days...

That being said, that would be selfish as I did not Play them-

STU's a Mac Man and gets my Vote :)

Thanks Bro, this is a very kind gesture

King-

Yes- By all means.

Why not?

It's practically 2016.

You state these are older clubs, and this was a photo shoot for MacGregor Golf?.

Along with Forged, STU, and myself, there are Ironmaster, Teevons, and most definitely xgolfx (Charley Penna) Toney's nephew, who has provided drawings to some of the older club models.

These plus a number of people whom I didn't mention.

I would absolutely be interested!

I'm sure Dave Wood is also interested, as he maintains some of his personal files and photos from MacGregor - contributing to a great Golfweek history of MacGregor published a few years ago. Dave discussed the possibility of some of my clubs being included in the article, but time restraints kept it from happening.

I haven't cleaned them yet, but here they are. Most have never seen a golf ball. They are late nintey's and early 2000's old. Not vintage, just old and dusty. Oh yeah there was a TaylorMade Bubble 2 in the mix.

Thanks for posting!

Unfortunately, and this is gonna sound harsh, but these are some fine examples of why MacGregor had reached the end of the line.

Although I have one of the 60 degree Grass-N-Sand wedges and it's not bad at all.

no not harsh. they were dropped on porch after spending ten years in a garage. I just thought someone would like to see them. They really mean nothing to me.
The Macgregor experience was fantastic. I met Don Smith and watched him make golf clubs. An honor, truly.

I think you mean Don White.

The Great, The Legendary, Don White. I was fortunate once to get to look at a set of irons he ground for Lee Janzen. I don't believe I've ever seen a set of irons with thinner soles, other than from the hickory era. But man were they gorgeous!

MacGregor made some great clubs right up until the end. The ones in your pictures were from a period prior to the very end where they got heavily into store line gear. They got out of that in the final years leading up to the finish.

I don't think being involved in store line gear necessarily led to their demise, because they always were involved in that to some degree except for the very end. But in the earlier days, their store line gear exhibited the class that one would expect from MacGregor. Aluminum drivers that say "Big One" don't exhibit that class.

Thanks for posting. I have to concur with what Shallowface said. It had to do with the times at hand and the swing (pardon the pun) of the golf industry at the time. I would have loved to see someone with money that appreciated and loved Macgregor clubs like I do buy that company maybe scale down the production numbers and increase the custom department. At one time they had one of the best custom departments along with Spalding and Wilson respectfully. I am not a business genius but would have liked to seen them go the custom direction with specially selected local fitters and dealers like Miura does now if that makes any sense at all. Quality over quanity.

unfortunately, the business model of quality not quantity is a recipe for failure in the club manufacturing industry. Craftsmen, equipment, and target market do not make sense. The raw cost of the packaging for a dozen balls costs more than the balls. After adding on the cost of overhead (endorsements, ads, etc) volume is the only answer. Club manufacture is a loser unless you have massive sales.

I totally agree with Charlie. My retirement gig entails building custom irons from vintage heads and some repairs to modern clubs. Taylormade clubs come in every day for repair. Worst assembled equipment I have seen in 35 years of this type work. Their deal is simply quanity over quality. I mean really how can a new driver or iron set touted as the best ever made have a replacement 6 months later, that is "the best club we have ever made". Come on guys, pull your head out of the sand! All modern companies follow this business plan. B.S. Get a set of clubs made when clubs were made with quality standards in mind and learn to play. After a point it is always the Indian not the Arrow. Mike

I don't think we need a golf equipment industry, actually. We need services, not manufacturing.

Maintaining courses. State-of-the-art scheduling of tee-times (starting people on 10th hole sometimes) to improve game times. Faster divot repair. Silent, or nocturnal mowing. Ball retrieval, cleaning, and re-selling. Club, bag, shoe repair.

Let the game shrink back to 'right size' after all the 'golf equipment purchasers' lose interest with no new releases and they only have the advice to improve their skills.
