Sleepers

Recommended Posts

As the topic suggest, and with the advent of some new converts to "vintage pickin," what have you, out of pity rescued that has been the sleeper find. The one that suprised you the most, in terms of playability and absolute joy to play.

For me, hands down the Palmer Tru Matics. Found them at Goodwill and for a set of 2-8 irons walked out the door for under $5.00. Purchased the 9 off the bay for around $20.00, including shipping. Regripped with some Black Widows I got on sale for .99 each at a big box.

Play as well as any iron I have ever struck a ball with.

Randy:

The standout that comes to mind. GR Tour Grind Axials 3 - PW. Found at Sallies (Sal Army) two summers ago for $6.00 IIRC. As much as I like Hogans (and try to play them) these are every bit as good if not better. They get passed over to often, but when I bring them back out for a round, pleasantly reminded on how well I play with them. Must be something about that high toe thing.

And picked up here and there for minimal, a set of Ram TW Scoring System wedges (50*, 55*, 60*) that are very nice wedges and accompaniment to the Axials. Would be very satisfied IF this was my only set of classic irons.

But man does not live.........by one set alone.

For me it would have to be the Ping Zing putter I rescued from the discarded club bin at the club I work at. It was corroded and had a rock hard cracked grip. Cleaned it up and added a fresh Pingman grip to it, now it putts for me as well as anything I've ever rolled a ball with.

A close second would be the Callaway BB Warbird driver I bought a year ago for $10. I had the best driving day of my life with that club in the fall. It has been a fairway finder as long as I've gamed it, but when I made a swing adjustment with my woods, I was stunned how far I could hit the thing!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I am currently holing putts from here, there and everywhere with a Ram Zebra Z7, that I brought brand new (and heavily discounted) for £20 in 1997 ... and never ever used until a few weeks ago ... :)

Great to hear. I picked up a set a month or two back for $20, 3-PW. In excellent shape. Certainly one of the better looking irons I've seen. Been trying to decide whether to put the inch on them I need and give them a try. Mine have the original grips, too, which don't really feel too bad.

Macgregor FCW 12 sand wedge. A really sweet club, as good off the turf as out of the catbox. Bought it for 4.95 at Play It Again Sports. Think it's from the late 70's. Parred 18 at Pebble Beach with a blast to 3 feet with this club. I don't keep many clubs out in the garage. If I don't use it, then it goes to the bay or to junior golf, but I'll always keep this one in the rotation.

Randy, I'm proud of you for buying those Palmers and keeping them from the scrap yard, otherwise Big Stu would've gotten them for free and not stimulated the economy at all!

LOL we don't get any scrap from his area. they have several yards around Chuckytown

You guys will not believe this. I posted over in the Confessions Section this week. Last week I found a Scotty Cameron Newport Mil Spec in the scrap pile. Monday I found a very rusty Cameron Santa Fe in the pile. Along with the Scotty I found last week I also found a Titleist 905r driver in great shape and a Mac M/T 10 iron. I know those are not classic but great finds

Holy Cow Stu, are you telling me I need to go to the Bees Ferry Landfill and hang out a bit. I'm thinking one might never know what one could find.

If it is like up here YES! But I will warn you -- You may run out of storage room quick. I think in this area and it is sad to think of it. Someone dies that was a club HO and the relatives are cleaning out the house for resale and scrap stuff not knowing anything about golf. The Mil Spec I suspect was a victim of that fate. It was in a nice Kentucky Wildcats cart bag with a lot of assorted clubs. None of the clubs matched but were high quality clubs.I also got several wedges in that haul that I did not mention. I even got the bag and gave it to a bud of mine who is a die hard Wildcat fan. Now the rusty Santa Fe came in a dump bin from one of the thrifts. It had probably sat around somewhere and rusted and someone again not knowing had donated it. Probably someone in the back room at the thrift saw it was very rusty and never put it on the floor into the bin it went

Hands down this set of Mizuno Cimarron Blades. I bought the 3-pw for $20 mostly for the bag they were in. Had heard that the Cimarron models were lesser Mizuno. Not these! Cleaned them up and took them out for a round and they are my hands down favorite set of clubs.

Not heard of them before, look a little like ben hogan radials with the wider soles, might go on the hunt for some!

Re: Mizuno Cimarrons I purchased a set new back in the early to mid-80s. I was interested in acquiring a set of Hogan Radials at the time but liked the look of the Cimarrons better with the higher toe.

With the rocker sole and higher toe they were promoted as a game improvement iron. My son still has the set.

Mizuno also manufactured a Cimarron set of persimmon woods. Very sharp looking!

The forged Cimarron iron, as pictured by TimV above, is a quality forging and not to be confused with the investment cast Cimarron iron offered by Mizuno in later years.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
