Phoenix in Febrary!

Yeah man what days are you gonna be here again? I can't play dunes or wickenburg, out of my budget but I'm always down for Aguila haha!

I always enjoy Tukee but I'll play it in the summer, a few years ago hey had times for literally $2. TWO dollars!

If you have access to any private tracks I'd try to get on!

I'm there the 23,24'25thnof February. Flying out early evening of the 25 th. I'd certainly be game for Aguila, never been there (don't know if it even existed when I was there). I'll PM when it's a week or so out.

Private clubs

Estancia ($350+ guest fee)

Whisper Rock if you get an offer to play jump at the chance

Desert Forest(one of my favorites anywhere)

Desert Mountain(should be fairly easy to get on)

Desert Highlands Nicklaus design spectacular views typical demanding Nicklaus 2nd shot course.

Silverleaf and DC Ranch both look great but have never played.

Phoenix CC classic tree lined parkland

Parson World aka Scottsdale National. 15 solid holes 3 horrible holes.

Thanks one-putt. I have a passing acquaintance with a Whisper Rock member, but not enough to probably use, and $350+ doesn't interest me. Kind of forgotten that when you get in the cities the privates are expensive. Not like ours here.

Most of the Scottsdale private clubs will be well north of $200 right now

Desert Mountain is 125 in summer lol.

Not sure on desert forest was fairly reasonable when i first played it in the spring 4-5 years ago.

There are others that are fun but may not feature as much desert golf.

I used to love summer golf there. And I'm more of a parkland style guy anyway, I'd rather hit out of 4" rough than the desert. I used to drive by Mesa CC,that's an option I had forgotten about.

So many options.........and so little time. As much as I want to play Wickenburg Ranch with the length of the drive (in an area I'm not familar with) and all the options around where I'll be, I may have to pass on it. I've read so many good things about Southern Dunes that I'm going to try to make sure to get to that one.

Anyone familar with Alta Mesa, I think one of the guys I used to play a couple tournaments with retired there.

I've played Alta Mesa once when I moved out to Gilbert, was considering joining but eventually passed. I thought the course was pretty fun with a good variety of holes, greens were blazing fast and they had some true rough when I played over the summer.

Given the option of Alta Mesa v's Mesa cc I'd rather play Mesa cc but Alta Mesa was pretty damn fun

Since you are staying close, play ASU Karsten. It will be closing in the next few years but it's a great Pete Dye course.

Southern Dunes is a great choice! They did a lot of work on it this year and it is even better.

I just played Las Sendas yesterday and it was in great shape and only $90.

Hit me up when it gets closer. I may be available. It would be nice to meet a fellow Wrxer

WRONG!!!! This is a junk course that should have been closed many years ago!

Southern Dunes used to be a men's only private course for years before being forced to go public. It used to be far better than it is now. While it is one of the best courses now, it was even better when it was private and shortly after it went public. It then went slightly downhill until the casino took over and infused money to add some "resort touches"

I just played Las Sendas yesterday and it was in great shape and only $90

While I personally kind of like LS, it is not worth $90 and definitely not worthy of an "only $90"

Lol you keep changing your tune about Mesa CC, ever so slowly. I remember when you first left there and were pretty upset about it. I guess time heals all wounds! Well except for feelings about Karsten but who could blame anyone for that! haha

I had no beef with the golf course itself, I played the hell out of it and loved playing there, really miss playing it. My issues were with management/financial stuff

Loved ASU Karsten! Played it last week and the only course of 5 you could stop the ball on the green. Makes me curious.....what's the issue with it?

Karsten is basically a homage to the worst design ideas Pete Dye has ever come up with. Only thing missing is an island green.

Railroad Ties check

Random bunkers in middle of fairway check

Random mounding to redirect a good drive away from fairway check.

Lazy copy and paste design from his previous designs check.

Southern Dunes is in Maricopa. It is quite a drive (for me anyway). It has gone downhill somewhat. Professional layout though.

Too bad you couldn't play Troon North Monument or Pinnacle. Boulders is nice also. Both are my favorite courses here. I have a Troon card which makes it more affordable.

Eagle mtn is also interesting with alot of elevation change. Quintero is a good test of golf. sunridge canyon is also nice.

Enjoy.

How in the world has Southern Dunes gone downhill?

If i get really nitpicky and i mean really nitpicky my knock would be it does not play as firm and fast as it should. However it's still an amazing golf course

Cool story.....

The course was actually designed to play firm and fast, but since those words are not in Troons vocabulary the course one could say they troonified it by making it too lush compared to the original intent.

But sure go ahead and tell me more about how i should play instead of discussing design.

No problem. Always willing to help out. :hi:

Given a choice, I'd rather play it the way it is currently rather than hard and fast. Not a fan of courses where luck of the bounce can determine the outcome of a good shot.

You sir are way off here! I have played the course since it was first built and now through all its different "conditions".

Southern Dunes has never been a "luck of the bounce" course in its original design and condition! That was the beauty of the course. Couples designed the course to play firm and fast so a player could take multiple lines off the tee based off the tee box played and the type of shot you would/could hit and how conservative/aggressive you chose to be. To expand further on the tee box piece: Couples designed a course unlike many others, in that regardless of which tee box you played, you would get a similar options. Not like many courses where if you play up a tee box, suddenly all you have to do is go over the bunker or reverse you now hit all the bunkers.

Tip: maybe learn about something before making a generalization.

Tip 2: not always prudent to direct sarcasm at someone far more adept at a topic than you
