You sir are way off here! I have played the course since it was first built and now through all its different "conditions".

Southern Dunes has never been a "luck of the bounce" course in its original design and condition! That was the beauty of the course. Couples designed the course to play firm and fast so a player could take multiple lines off the tee based off the tee box played and the type of shot you would/could hit and how conservative/aggressive you chose to be. To expand further on the tee box piece: Couples designed a course unlike many others, in that regardless of which tee box you played, you would get a similar options. Not like many courses where if you play up a tee box, suddenly all you have to do is go over the bunker or reverse you now hit all the bunkers.

Tip: maybe learn about something before making a generalization.

Tip 2: not always prudent to direct sarcasm at someone far more adept at a topic than you

Maybe "luck of the bounce" was a poor choice of words. Without course knowledge, you would be a disadvantage. You could hit a good shot and because it wasn't the right line (because you didn't know) you would be in trouble. That might be fine for a private facility, but not for a course that now relies on non-member play. Hence my opinion that I would rather not play a course (that I might only play once or twice) that is set up hard and fast.

That being said, I really enjoyed playing Southern Dunes and hope to play it soon.

Sorry if I offended you. No harm was meant.

Southern dunes still plays fast and firm from around May through September. I agree that during overseed they do get it pretty lush.

Not even close to what it used to be though dude, it was entirely different . And last summer I had to take relief from casual water on three different occasions in the middle of the summer due to watering, not summer rainfall.

I see. Well it's too bad I never got to play it that way. I would imagine 12 and 14 would have played much differently, plus 9 you could use that hill left of the green and I'm sure many other shots I'm not thinking of.

Not a fan of courses where luck of the bounce can determine the outcome of a good shot.

Maybe "luck of the bounce" was a poor choice of words. Without course knowledge, you would be a disadvantage. To me, golf without the option of the ground game is only a subset of the whole. And a course that offers no disadvantage to the first time player would seemingly offer a very mundane golf experience.

Golf is way more interesting than the modern style of "perfect golf swing executed to the perfectly lasered yardage that stops on the perfectly green and soft target." A purely physical exercise. No mystery, no discovery needed, no choices to make, no thought required. "It's all right there in front of you."

Troon makes buckets of money catering to the one-play tourist market but that's why we have so many crappy courses in the PHX. Perfectly manicured and perfectly uninteresting.

So my gf is bringing me to Phoenix next week, and she is allowing me to play everyday, as long as it is early. Due to the severe case of cabin fever I have (winter in MN can easily do that), I jumped on her offer, and I got the following tee times.

- Monday 22th, Southern Dunes @ 7:44 (still 1 opening in teeoff, $87)

- Tuesday 23rd, Aguila @ 8:26 (all foursome booked, I paid $32)

- Wednesday 24th, Toka Sticks @ 7:40 (2 openings. I am playing with inlaw that day)

- Thursday 25th @ Dove Valley @ 7:30 (3 openings, sadly had to pay $92 in golfnow)

Anyone that wants to join me is welcome.
