New 3 wood vs. Rangefinder?

Hey everyone,

 

So, I just got the fitted for the new TM M1 driver which I love. Should be here soon. I got the go ahead and can get either the M1 fairway wood or a rangefinder before we head to Florida in 2 weeks for a golf trip!

 

Right now I do not have a rangefinder, I use an app.

 

I play an R11 3-wood, I hit it well and not sure I would gain anything by getting a new 3-wood? I maybe hit 3-wood a few times a round. I hit my driver roughly 300 yards so most holes it's driver and a wedge or short iron.

 

What are you thoughts?

Rangefinder all the way. I probably use mine at least 18-25 times per round. FAiway wood maybe 1-5 times if that.

 

I have a GPS and since buying the rangefinder j hardly use the GPS unless I need a layup distance or want to measure a shot distance.

You said you were going on a trip so to me, that kind of spells rangefinder/GPS. I use my Garmin G5 all the time when I'm playing new courses. That's an invaluable tool.

 

 

 

That being said, 95% of the golf that gets played would be faster, less stressful and ultimately more enjoyable if it were done without the aid of distance measuring devices. What I mean is that if you're playing a course you have played several times before, you should probably not be using a GPS or rangefinder. If you're familiar with a course, not only should you be able to figure out the yardages based on what you know, but you should also already be aware of which holes play long or short due to whatever.

 

Not only will it slow you and your group down but it will detract from your ability to use your eyes which are a huge part of the game. I've gotten out of the habit of always taking my GPS to the courses that I know and to be honest, my scores are unaffected. If I'm playing well I shoot close to par, if my swing's a mess, I don't. ;)

i say you can put a call out there in golfwrx land and possibly land both. If I had to choose, I would say rangefinder since you only hit a 3 wood every so often.

Rangefinder. I use mine pretty much every hole for approach shots (it's generally much faster than trying to find a yardage marker and walk off the distance). Plus, while it is rare to see a used rangefinder at a deep discount, you'll be able to find a used M1 3 wood at a good price in the not too distant future.

Thanks, I do have an iPhone app that I use, GolfLogix that works pretty good and for courses that I am not familiar with seeing the entire hole and layup yardages is nice.

 

That's why I am torn, stick with the GolfLogix app and get the 3 wood or just get a range finder?

 

Not sure how much I would gain by getting a new 3-wood as I hit the R11 pretty well most of the time.

Doesn't sound like you need a 3 wood.

Rangefinder is the way to go. You will use it on every hole, every time you play. The App is fine for general distances, but the laser will get you exact yardage to anything you want.

Rangefinder. And it slows down nothing. Don't mean to beat a dead horse from that other thread. My rangefinder is a Godsend, especially for new places.

Buy one of them before you go and the other on your trip and surprise your wife with something and everyone is happy...or I'd just get the range finder.

I've had my range finder for 5 years, my 3 wood for 3 months. The better investment is by far the range finder

Watch out with Amazon their prices change second to second it seems. Could be a higher price by the time you get to the store
