Time Machine Greats Showdown

Carn, ^^^^ lol, there would be none. remember everyone is stepping out of a time capsule, with a clean slate. nobody would know each other... every player and their caddie would be looking around thinking, "who's THAT dude and WHY is he wearing those ugly clothes?"

EDIT: I personally believe that it's clearly Hogan that wins best dressed award.

Ooooh, I didn't want to mention this, but could you imagine some of these guys stepping out of a time capsule to see tiger playing? I would like to think, they thought game and not color. Crazy to think how far we've come. Would there be an intimidation factor there?

lol, personally, I think the players would be more concerned with all the crazy looks Stevie would be giving them than a black dude warming up on the driving range! and I think that's the last post to put on here as possible "political/social" comment. I don't want Carn's thread to digress.

ok, since I suggested it, here's mine to get things started... the seeding is my belief on the inherit strength of the player (at the zenith of their career), in the relation to the field. and we'll see if a trend develops (I'm curious to see who's the Top10) as the lists add on...

  1. Jack N. -------11. Arnold P.
  2. Tiger W.------12. Walter H.
  3. Sam S. ------ 13. Lee T.
  4. Ben H.--------14. Billy C.
  5. Bobby J.------15. Gary P.
  6. Rory M.-------16. Nick F.
  7. Greg N.-------17. Gene S.
  8. Phil M.--------18. Raymond F.
  9. Tom W.-------19. Seve B.
  10. Byron N.------20. Harry V.

Plus everyone from the future tense would know everyone from the past? Rory would know of the other's greatness? Tiger would know of Nicklaus. Nicklaus will know of Vardon, etc. Past exploits would be intimating especially if Tiger necessarily didn't know of his progress from 2001-2016, since he is 2000 Tiger. For all he knows he never got close to Jack.

this thread has a Trekkie feel now...

Randy, Gibson had a monster year in '68. Always liked how he pitched, angry and fearless. However, no doubt based on my provincialism, a counterpoint:

B. Gibson: 22 - 9, 1.12 ERA, 304.2 IP, 268 SO, 198 H, 28 CG.

D. McLain: 31 - 6, 1.96 ERA, 336.0 IP, 280 SO, 241 H, 28 CG.

Over the course of a career, Gibson by far the better pitcher. But for just one year, 1968, I give an ever so slight nod to McLain. After all, the Tigers did win the Series beating Gibson in Game 7. Although because of Lolich, not McLain. (Thank you Lou Brock for not sliding.)

As always, very difficult comparing athletes of different eras. Certainly Ali in his prime was dominant. But could he have beat Joe Louis in his prime? And was there a better boxer, pound for pound, than Sugar Ray Robinson. 25 year career, 173 wins with 109 KO's.

And for a singular, monumental achievement in sports. Bob Beamon, 1968 Olympics, with a long jump of 29' 2 1/2" (8.90 m). Bettering the world record by an astonishing 21 3/4".

As for the golfers? Seedings? Haven't a clue. Really all just speculation anyway. But hard to beat the dominance displayed by Tiger in 2000. With 3 majors at Pebble, St. Andrews, and Valhalla. Best of all time, how could it not be Jack. The major wins (and the number of seconds) says so. A record that may stand the test of time just like '4,256' or '511' (Cy Young).

In a cage match shootout, with any sticks from any era, placing my bet on JN.

Sorry. I got stuck on the whole time-travel thing to start with. Surely it is not travelling through time that is the problem, but locating the right space as well, given the speed at which we are hurtling through the void. Neither Bill & Ted movie provided a satisfactory solution, for me.

Likewise Schrodinger's cat. Schrodinger himself died in the 1960s or something so surely his cat has been dead for ****ing ages.

The Gary Player who lives in his head would win every time and twice on Sundays, whilst punching 1970 Mohammed Ali's lights out between the first green and second tee, beating Usain Bolt in a race to the third, checkmate for Big Blue on the way to the fourth, and so on and so on.

And none of this would be possible had he not invented time travel. And golf.

It is tricky, but not impossible. Shortened my swing a lot... though I am slightly... heavy... set and Vardon et al might have had better tailors.

I also regularly play in normal long-sleeved cotton shirts too, having never really gone for the polos, unless the weather is really good. Which it rarely is.

At the end of the day though, a suit of armour and a garden broom and I'd find a way to give you a game.

Definitely would be a tour for the ages. Predictions for winners

Tourney of Champ. at Olympic Club - Always seems to be the suprise winner, Fleck and Casper, but with no real dark horses in this tour, I guess Hogan and Watson would get the nod.

Masters - I'd say Jack narrowly over Tiger. This likely would be the closest tournament of all, but I have to give the nod to Jack here, for '86 if no other reason.

US Open - At Pebble, Tiger has to be the favorite. Never seen a major championship course get taken to the woodshed like Tiger did in 2000. At "traditional" US Open course, I'll take Hogan or Nelson as slight favorites w/ Jack and Tiger close behind.

British Open - True toss up between nearly six players. Jack, Tiger, Watson, Vardon, Faldo, and Peter Thompson.

PGA at Merion - Jones and Hogan have to be the favorites, with Jones I think the slight edge.

I'm taking Ali (in his prime) Man-O-War, and the '68 Cards with Gibby on the hill.

For me those are no brainers, will have to think about the golf seeding before I submit an entry.

Fine with Ali but Secretariat is tops and maybe the '67 Cards instead as they won the Series. Gentleman that followed the post I am responding to must have been high at the time, or from Detroit, to think McLain was better than Gibson. Even if just for one year.

Gibson hands down. Even in 68.

In April, Nicklaus beats Woods with a birdie on 18 on his 72nd hole, he hits a 1 iron off the tee for position. Jimmy Demaret is 3rd

In May, Johnny Miller gets on fire with the irons and beats Sam Snead at the The Players. Gary Player had an outside chance but his gator wrestling Sat. night wore him out for Rd 4

In June, Ben Hogan has Tiger rolled over like a kitten showing his belly in the US Open. Byron Nelson finishes 3rd because he's still been retired for 3 years.

July, I see an epic battle in Scotland with Tom Watson prevailing over over Peter Thomson, Seve and Bobby Locke.

August, in my dreams, the PGA is back to match play. Bobby Jones takes down Walter Hagen 1 up in a 36 hole final. The semi's had Nicklaus and Palmer ousted.
