The OP was good stuff. Still, I was taught that, especially from the fringe areas, that there is one iron in your bag that if you stroke it like you would your putter from the same spot it would go as far as your putter. For me, that is a 9 iron. I can choke it down slightly where it feels like putter length, put a stroke on it equivalent to putting from that distance and the ball ends up by the hole. Just another technique to try in addition to the Rule of 12.

I find there really is no need to walk off the yardage to the hole - just eyeball it.

I derived the following logic by going to a large flat green and experimenting. Once I decide where I want to land the ball, it a simple thing to select the appropriate club depending on the speed of the green and whether uphill/downhill :

• LW (60) - roll out = 1/2x carry
  
• SW (56) - roll out = 1x carry
  
• GW (52) - roll out = 2x carry
  
• PW (48) - roll out = 3x carry
  
• 9i (44) - roll out = 4x carry
  
• 8i (40) - roll out = 5x carry
  

I rarely have to go any lower than an 8i or I'll end up over the back of most greens I putt on.

 

This is more in line with what I experience - little hotter ball and faster greens - essentially the Rule of 13. Like it.

It's interesting to hear folks say that using only one or two wedges around the green requires a lot of practice. For me, I would have to practice a lot with various irons in order to ingrain a "feel" for the distance each will produce.

 

Typically, I use my 54 when I have green to work with, and my 58 when I don't. Occasionally I may drop to my 50 when it is uphill to a back pin. I rarely see a situation when I need lower launch/spin around the green than I get with that 50.
