Odyssey X-ACT Tank Chipper

I've got my cap down to 11 and just recently put a Ping Chip-O back in the bag. It's a redundant club because I can chip fairly well but on flattish lies when you need a bump and run this thing can't be beat.

 

On a recent trip to Arizona the pair we played against every day (playing skins for dinner) got pissed cause if we missed a green I'd pull Chip-O out and stick it to within tap in range.

 

The Chip-O became known as "El Chip-O" and the physiological factor was huge... huge confidence for me while also messing with the minds of the others. Now I can't get rid of it!

Chipping is tough. I have a buddy who played the Niblicks for a long time. No shame in a chipper.

 

Here's a tip though, use your putter grip and stroke on most chips and just let the loft of the club do the work, it will take your dominant hand out of the stroke and chipping will be much easier. If I'm feeling yippy I will even do it with my lob wedge. It comes out dead and trickles to the hole.

The truth is I can putt from 20 yards away as well as most can chip it - not sure why but it's true. My issue is the right hand just fires at impact on chips and a number of things (none of them good) can happen. It's 100% brain wiring as some wrx members who are my regular foursome can attest.

 

There isn't going to be a fix to my issue (short of brain trauma of some sort) - mitigating it by putting or perhaps even something like this is my best bet

 

I had the same issue with my right hand. Try putting 70% of your weight left and chipping left hand low (like you would putt left hand low). The right goes quiet and I'm a machine with a 49* wedge left hand low. It's weird but it quiets the right hand right down.

 

Don't use a chipper. It's an 8 iron.

This thread has inspired me to consider one. Chipping has always been the worst part of my game, with putting a close second.

For you X-Act users- Have you found any decent after-market head-covers to use? It's a shame Odyysey didn't provide one for this club.

I bought the Club Glove mallet cover and it was too small.

I know a stock cover was produced as I read some guys were getting it when they bought it at the store. Then again maybe those were some old the Marksman chipper covers in the back room still laying around. Mine was bought used so it had bag chatter. Figured why cover it now.

 

Anyone know if you can buy a replacement grip? Mine is starting to feel slick.

Regardless of the generic answer to that question, the X-Act Tank chipper is 100% conforming to the current Rules of Golf.

The USGA says that chippers are legal as long as they (among other things) don't "have an appendage for aiming purposes". The part of the X-Act that sticks out the back and has three alignment lines seems to be exactly that - an appendage for alignment purposes. Its hard to look at that chipper and not think its illegal.

 

I'm not saying your wrong, I just can't find any source that says its conforming.

Callaway stated back when it was announced (in either a blog or some of their video marketing bumpf) that they had submitted it to USGA and it was deemed conforming.
