So I was practicing on the putting green atthe only course here in Changchun, China when all of a sudden I notice this gorgeous silver fox sitting just off the green watching me. Lmao, nobody else around here has seen a white man, so why should she be any different? We stared at each other, me admiring her and she wondering exactly what I was...Lol.

 

Anyways, when people ask me why I golf, I ask them how much time they have to listen...

I like to think of a peaceful animal encounter on the course as a good omen. The other day after work a bald eagle flew close by over me. There is a family of them that live in a wetlands near my course so I see them every so often but this time it was a close encounter. I could have thrown a golf ball to it. Later that round I made two birdies on #7 and #8.

I was the only one on our practice range a few weeks ago and watched two little fonds (baby deer) run around the practice green about 50 yards away. They were tiny and chasing each other. I just watched them for a little bit and then they took off.

Not to be the rain on the party but ..... Better be careful .. Foxes are one of the most common rabies carriers, along with raccoons. Around here a " friendly " fox is one to be feared right away. They will come around people when having their " fits " at the height of the rabies episodes. That one looks ok but I have seen and had tested several dead foxes that approached people in a strange way and all 3 were rabies positive.

 

 

All that being said im an animal lover and it pains me to kill anything. But farm life makes it necessary at times for the safety of the other animals and people. I didn't want anyone to think I'm a " ooh ick animal hater ". Just thought I would throw out the caution flag.

To add to this, foxes and most predatory animals, tend to be nocturnal and are extremely wary of humans (doesn't matter what your skin tone is - we look and smell, basically, the same to them. The only time foxes spend much time out and about in the middle of the day is during their mating season.

 

There was/is a fox at my course that was quite mangey and was oblivious to humans. Other foxes would get used to human prescence, but they still kept an eye on you and kept their distance. This guy absolutely didn't care if you were there or not. Saw him stroll along the driving range, across the putting green, and through a grassed parking area one afternoon. I don't think he has rabies, though, because I've spotted him over the course of months. The last time I saw him was a few weeks ago carrying a dead fawn across the driving range. He would trot along for 50 yds, drop the fawn, and rest, then pick it up and keep going... 20-30 yds away from golfers hitting shots over top of him! Probably one of the more amazing things I have seen, given the context, lol.

In protected areas, like golf courses, wild animals can learn that they are safe around humans.

So yeah, there's a popular mountain about an hour north of Montreal called Mont Tremblant. It's a super touristy place and there's no hunting or anything. So i guess the deer have gotten used to being around humans. I guess people feed them too. There's 4-5 golf courses up there, 3 of which are pretty close to the town in the mountains.

 

So i'm playing one called Le Geant (the Giant), and we've been seeing Deer all day, tons of them. And they've been very friendly and not running away. On the 16th hole there's one chilling next to the green when we get there....i'm going to putt the ball and i feel something push me from behind, figured it was my friend just being a jerk....but no, the deer had walked onto the green and nudged me with his head. My friends were cracking up, they didn't want to say anything

A few years ago, I was playing with another WRXer at Wasatch Golf's mountain course here in Utah. Just beautiful. Problem was, on the back 9 (i believe) a stretch runs along a heavily wooded area, as you'd expect. One of the tee boxes was very torn up with what looked to be Godzilla deer hoof prints. And sure enough, about 70 yards off the tee (smooth 7 iron), we spotted the culprit...a fairly largish moose who had taken a pro-environment/anti-golf view on the world, challenging our very different view. In the end, I took a penalty free drop 250 yards down the fairway, guilt free.

 

I'd like to think I got the better of the exchange. The moose would disagree.

Yes about 2mins away. Both off the main road. Diable is the better overall course

I'm kind of spoiled where I live. I can throw my bag over my shoulder and walk literally across the street to Eagle's Nest GC. But Diablo has been on my bucket list for many years.

I've never seen a snake on the course but playing in California for 13 years I'm sure I've been within a few feet of more than a handful. I've seen a lot of deer, turkey's, hawks, eagles, etc. I like nature, I like courses that make you feel like your peaking into nature. And not just running around a big green spot amongst all the houses.
