New Strategy: Playing with a bad toothache?

Seeing the dentist this morning. Pretty sure I have an abscess and will need a root canal. Yesterday evening: Took some ibuprofen and numbed up the area with some benzocaine and went out and shot one of my better rounds this year.

 

Couldn't think of anything but the pain and "hit the ball". May be a good strategy to delay the root canal until after my tournament this Sunday, but probably not worth it considering the prize is a trophy, some points, and probably a $75 gift card to the pro shop (which might buy me shirt).

Worst pain in the world is a tooth abysses, followed shortly by gout. Of course, in the states you also have the additional pain of having to pay a fortune to get it sorted

Two of my best rounds were after an injury and/or being sick.

 

Maybe 15 years ago, was planning on going to this private club of a buddy of my dad's. Woke up with a kidney infection (used to get them on occasion). If you've never had one, it's killer pain in the side, blood in the pee, and a nice fever to boot. Went to the urgent care, got some anti-biotics. Took them, took a nap, woke up with no pain, headed to the course. Shot a 78 on a tough course that I wasn't familiar with, when I was about a 10 handicap.

 

The other was when I cut my right index finger on a table saw. Played a couple of days later with a rain glove on the right hand to hold the pieces together. lol. Shot a couple over.

I past a Kidney Stone once on the golf course. When not addressing and hitting the ball, I was bent over in pain. I had one prior so knew what was happening. Lasted about 6 holes, then I was fine. Can't say I played particularly well though.

I've been working on the course management / mental side of the game and supposedly there's something to the fact that you're just too distracted to think about the normal stuff that ends up just working against you.

I played a whole season with two herniated discs in 2004.

 

Debilitating sciatica and it was hard to put any weight on left foot for fear of the dreaded excrutiating pain running from arse to big toe

 

Blown out in April and surgery was November and again in December that year

 

I didn't play too badly that summer .... maybe you're onto something

Amazing how this works. It seems any time I have car trouble I will have a great round. A couple of years ago I got a ticket on friday and shot 71 or 72 the next day. This year I had to scramble to replace a flat tire before an 11 am tee time in a tournament and I played well. I think it's just the distraction element. Sometimes we care so much, we don't play to our potential. A slight distraction can go a long way.
