LPGA commentators' most over-used phrases....

Yes this... She always looks like the prom queen off the course, but on the course while watching her shot she is the frown queen...

 

How about "Judy, when you were..." (fill it in)

 

Judy:

"Ariya's routine is she smiles before she takes a shot, or putts... it helps her remain positive...

"You can see in the playback that Ariya was smiling right before she putted that ball, it helps her keep a positive thought"

 

Speaking about anyone: "She wishes"... "She won't be too happy about"... "I'm sure she'd like"...

"She couldn't have gotten that shot much closer that that" (how about in the hole?)

 

"Twenty-Two year old player Sung Hyun Park's caddie Jeff King has worked out a system where he will make drawings to communicate with his player since he doesn't speak Korean, and she speaks very little English" (oh no, what will they do when she turns Twenty-Three?)

The only thing that makes Judy Rankin bearable for me is when Terry Gannon starts talking, she stops. She goes over the top with trying to sensationalize the LPGA tour. I think we all know those ladies can play, so let them.

 

Don't get me wrong, I love the LPGA and watch regularly; Rankin just rubs me wrong.

I can't watch LPGA. The announcers are so bad. "she's left herself with a very difficult up and down. She'll be lucky to get this within 5 feet." She got up and knocked it to 6 inches like it was nothing.

 

I find the announcers to be patronizing and sexist.

 

 

The PGA commentators are worse at this, by far, than the LPGA commentators.

My last post in this thread.....As of today I will automatically turn the sound off when any of these nit wits are on especially Rankin.......She talked for ever about the change in Jutanugarn and never even talked about her golf game........These golf telecasts have way too much "what a lovely young lady", and "she has been thru so much", and" she is in a much better place".....The word sickening comes to mind.

Golf Channel is truly like Groundhog Day...

 

I watched Round 1 of the Canadian Open on YT. Next day I watched Round 2... Spooky, they were saying exactly the same things, sometimes word for word. I had to check 3 times that this was actually Round 2 and not Round 1. This is unsettling for one's sanity.....

Kind of agree. Part of the problem is that American golf TV has decided that silence is unacceptable and in a sport like golf that leaves a lot of space to fill. Unenviable position. But I don't like it for the reason you point out. They drill the narrative into the ground. Another problem with TV is that they are constantly pandering to the hypothetical person who is supposedly tuning in for the first time. Always hated that. It's like when you go into a store wanting to buy something and you have to wait because the salesperson is on the phone answering BS questions. Priorities man.

Judy and Terry are much more spontaneous and conversational, which is better for me. Tom is an endless data stream of facts, facts, facts....after a while it's like a dentist's drill boring into your skull.

 

Completely agree that the European commentators are in an altogether different league.

Terry is very good and Tom is enjoyable as well. Together they play off each other and joke around, something you don't get with any other duo.

Count me a Judy fan. I think of her and Terry in the same way as Tirico and Aliss back in the day.

 

Anyways, maybe not a commentators most over-used phrase as such, but how about that ticker at the bottom of the screen that shows the results/current state of an LPGA event while the GC is replaying something else instead or spending 20 mins on Tiger before getting to the Canadian Open highlights.

"She's not afraid to go low".....Dumbest statement on any golf broadcast.

 

By the token Piller would be an example of a pro that DOES seem to be afraid to go low on Sundays. :(
